Kathy's Story
My family was transfered to Oregon before I could graduate from Arroyo Grande. It was hard to leave my friends that I had grown up with and have wondered about all of you from time to time. I graduated from South Salem High, in Salem Oregon. I worked for a construction company for many years and traveled all around the united states. Finally got married and had two sons. We started a wild mushroom business in 1983 based out of our home in Lyons Oregon. I buy, sell, market and ship wild forest products here in the states and abroad. My office is "in the woods", and I do enjoy the freedom. Our home is located in the Cascade Mountains. We live in a A-Frame on a hill top, with lots of huge doug fir surrounding us. There is a large river, The Santiam, on one side of our property and a smaller river, The North Fork, on the other side of our property. We can grab a fishing pole and fish for trout, steelhead or salmon just about any time we want. I have deer, elk, cougar and bobcats who visit regularly. It's green and beautiful here. The beaches up here, however, are not Avila..thats for sure. A lot of things to miss about living on the central coast. We spend a lot of time in the woods working and playing. vid motorcyclist. We have probably 40 bikes now. He collects vintage dirt bikes, mainly european. He passed his enthusiasm of riding to our sons, who ride quads and husqvarnas now. My hubby rides road bikes more now, as it is easier on the body. I had my own dirt bikes for years, but gave it up years ago. One of our sons races in vintage races and does quite well. Because we live a pretty rual life, I thought it would be interesting to get the kids involved in 4-H, as there was not a FFA program here. We raised "show" pigs for many many years and got into breeding them for show. Probably raised 500 animals over the years. Really glad that is over with. Lots of work, and boy are they smart and hard headed. It was always a dream to take the boys to Arroyo Grande to show them where we grew up.....maybe someday. I understand that my grandmothers dance hall was dismantled and taken to the Loomis Ranch. Would be fun to see it someday. I have certainly had a very interesting life, absolutely nothing like I thought of when I was young. Who would have thought that I would end up in Oregon, married to a crazy viet nam vet, live and work in the woods, ride bikes, raise pigs and be pretty content with a very different lifestyle.
