Katie's Story

Since I've found you on Facebook, I thought I'd fill you in on what's been happening since I got out of college. I met my husband (Neil) just after graduation; we've been married for about 10 1/2 years now (but together for about 15). I spent a lot of our early years together being sicker than a dog, in and out of the hospital - some of it diabetes related, some of it just bad genetics. I've had way too many operations - amputaion of my lower left leg, a gastric pacemaker implant, open heart surgery for a triple bypass, and a kidney transplant (I did spend two years on dialysis waiting for that to happen). The transplant is 4 1/2 years old and I'm doing pretty well. As for hobbies, I've gotten into a lot of things I never would've considered pre-graduation. I discovered I actually *like* sewing (mostly costuming), RPGing (Dungeons & Dragons, Mutants & Masterminds, Cyberpunk 2020, Feng Shui and Exalted), bowling, and arts and crafts. I've also gotten very into live theater and musicals (watching, not as an actor) - eventually I'd like to try costuming for the Portland Opera. I also dig cooking and I belong to a book club. I did the book club thing because I found that I was reading almost exclusively fantasy and historical fiction. I also belong to the Beaverton Woman's Club, and am an active part of putting on our annual fundraiser - a raffle and tea that boast about 250 women attending. I must say, I LOVE p...Expand for more
utting together the raffle. I've never put together a basket that was worth less than $100 and most of them are closer to $300. I've co-chaired 2 of the events and have been procurement chair for the last 4. Mom and I will probably co-chair the 2010 tea. My other favorite philanthropic event is Abby's Closet, which is an annual event that gives away free prom gowns to any girl with a valid high school ID. I've worked the event as a seamstress for the last few years and I get a real high watching the gratitude on these gals faces! They're so jazzed to get the gowns of their dreams, and I lvoe knowing that *I* made it fit them the way it needs to. I've even made a few house calls free of charge too replace zippers and alter hemlines. Neil and I co-own a home with my mom (my dad recently passed away) and my grandmother lives with us. Most people think we're crazy, but I guess we always have been. No kids (due to medical reasons) but I refuse to grow up myself, and my friends and family have plenty of little ones for me to admire and play with. I have a card on my hobby desk that says "My life seemed normal until I tried to explain it to someone once." How True! On top of all this, I'm heading home to Citrus Heights this summer for my 20 year class reunion - time really flies when you're busy doing other thigns! Hope this finds you doing well and basically enjoying life. Hope to hear from you soon! Hugs, Katie
