Katrina's Story

Valentine's Weekend '09: After the San Diego fires around Halloween '07, we put our stuff in storage there & came back to our house in Melbourne, FL (my Sept '07 entry follows this one). That was a very difficult time for us but are doing really good now. In '08, I did 3 marathons: New Orleans, LA...Carrollton, MI...Moline (Quad Cities), IL. Fernando's new work as a mgmt. consultant (based in Newport Beach, CA)had him commuting from D.C. to FL for several months. Then he got assigned to do LiveTV based here in Melbourne (it is so weird having him home during the week!). They do the tvs in the Jetblue airplanes so we've had a lot of "fun" trying out standby flying which is one of the perks. If I hadn't been ill this week & if the NBA playoffs hadn't sold out all the flights--we'd have been in AZ for my #13 marathon. Oh well... I did #12 in Mobile, AL in January. If any of you are coming Orlando way to do the theme parks, let me know. I continue at Universal Orlando. We are doing Mardi Gras on Saturdays. Two weekends ago, was KC & the Sunshine Band. Remember when they were at Grad Nite at Disneyland? KC can still strut! Have any of you done this or had one of your children do this? Last spring we went up to Tallahassee to pick up our oldest (Nathan, 20)for summer break. With 15 credits to go in Criminology (honor student), he tells his poor folks, "I don't want to do Criminology any more." We got the deer-in-the-headlights-fish-out-of-water look. Fernando gave him the $$$ side of the story, I gave him the "I gave birth to you & I will see you walk across that stage" story. Guess he got "tired of looking at the dark side of people" (his knack is figuring out whodunnit profiles before capture). Well, we compromised. He finished in December & will "walk the stage" in April because right now he's taking Economics courses to get a minor in that & bridge into an MBA. Our 18-yr. old is in his 4th semester...Expand for more
of jr. college & totally into music--all 17 credit hours! Not free all those electives so some dear teacher took mercy on us parents & gave him a scholarship. Whew! With all that serious vocal & music theory training we are still amazed his band(s) are the screaming kind. "But Mom, this is why I don't lose my voice or damage it." Part of the deal is he has to do church choir. He did finish his Eagle Scout project & AFTERWARDS said it was all worth it & how easy it was...All I can say is I'm looking forward to these guys going thru the same things with their own one day! Sept. '07: Remember when it was this time of year & we were all getting ourselves ready for school? Did Marathon #8 in June...San Diego Rock 'n Roll. Too fun. I was to do Maui this month but will choose another. One that's driveable from San Diego. Summer was back at Universal Orlando on the front lines. Love that job. Of the thousands who came by me, a trio from Hilmar. They needed a little extra help & I was right there. My name tag has "Atwater, CA" on it. Oldest son is back at Florida State--junior in Criminal Justice. The 16-year old was w/me in FL doing gigs with his new band. The other 4 boys stayed in CA with the 3 dogs. Our iguana, Trex, passed away in March. She was about 7 and I cried for 2 weeks. Whenever I'm here in SD, I feel like it's a vacation. The heat I hardly notice after spending the summer in FL and marathon training there. I would liken that to being a melting candle or popsicle. Day & night! At AHS, I was in the Service Club & I still love to serve. In FL, I do several hours/week at a nursing home. It slows me down & gives me perspective. A 39-year old man I visit is quadraplegic since 17 so he reminds me of our '80 classmate who became quad after a water accident. What a difficult journey. Hope you all are enjoying your lives. Time is short & goes by too quickly for me. Live & let live!
