Kay's Story

I am a long-time resident of the west side. I attended John Burroughs Elementary, Hilltonia and Westmoor Junior High schools, then West High and finished the last two credits at Central. I have many fond memories as a kid hanging out at Hilltop Lanes, Hilltop Swim Club, Skateland and Valleydale. My mom dated the guy who owned Hilltop Lanes for a few years (probably from ages 9-12), so I was able to bowl whenever and as often as I wanted and actually got pretty good at it. I also thought I was cool since I got to work behind the counter of the bowling alley and mingle with high school kids. Lots of West High kids chose the bowling alley to hang out after school to listen to the juke box, gossip and use the private, enclosed phone booth. I learned many new dances from them, not to mention hair styles and fashion tips. I had a pass to Hilltop Swim Club for several summer breaks and spent many Friday and/or Saturday nights at Skateland (especially when they would have local bands playing). I remember seeing the Rebounds and the Dantes, among others. I also remember we had quite a few musicians from or near the west side: Unknown Kind (loved the hearse), Orange Noise, Metronomes, just to name a few. I also remember watching many Battle of the Bands competitions at Valleydale. I remember walking through the horrible water tunnel behind Westmoor (what was I thinking). I remember when we had the riots at West and the SDS sit-in. I remember cutting classes and fearing Mrs. Krebs. I also remember being sent home, along with some other girls, for wearing jeans. That rule was changed fairly soon after that, thank you very much (I think that was 10th grade). What a rebel I was! I married Tom Clark who was a west-sider (Hilltonia) until ninth grade, when he moved to Arlington, and...Expand for more
we had a son (in no particular order). Tom had been my boyfriend since 6th grade but we divorced in 1985. I have great son, a fantastic daughter-in-law and two amazing grand-daughters. I reconnected with Cliff Mahr (West High class of 1972) in 1988 and we have been together ever since (we finally decided to get married in 2002). We both enjoy music and Cliff still plays around town every now and then, just for fun. After graduation he played in local and a few national bands full-time (he was actually in a later version of the Buckinghams, if anyone remembers them). He soon realized there had to be a better way to make $5K a year (ha-ha) so he gave up playing full-time and began working as a communications programmer/analyst. I, on the other hand, have nothing as exciting to report. I did get join Cliff in England when he was working there to install software. It was fascinating to visit another country and see where his mother and some other relatives had lived. His mother was born and raised in England and grew up during WWII. She remembers the bombings, the food and gasoline rationing, the blackouts and the shelters. She still has the accent even though she has been here over 60 years. She also remains a British subject. I like to read and am trying to stay in shape. Better yet, I do not feel (or act) my age, so I have got that going for me. I have been working as an office manager for the last 15 years. Cliff and I enjoy going out with friends to listen to local bands around town and maybe have a drink or two. Last but not least, we have two very spoiled Boston Terriers that bring us a lot of happiness! They are the kids we never had! The female weighs 13 pounds and the male weighs 25 pounds. The female definitely thinks she is the alpha-dog. It is hilarious!
