Kay's Story

Life I'm currently 52 years old. 2 children from my first marriage (the one right out of high school that ended in divorce after 10 years) son 33 and daughter 31. Second marriage was a keeper.I have been married to the greatest man in the world for the last 22 years. Exceptionally happy. Never did go to college. Took some technical courses. Spent 23 years working for Charleston County Emergency Medical Services. Had to take a medical retirement following an on the job injury in 2001. Got hit by lightning while on duty. Currently dealing with all the stuff related to those complications. Spend most of my time spoiling my husband, kids, dog and cats. Just waiting for the grandkids. When not engaged in the affore mentioned activities, I am very involved with my church. Ocean Grove United Methodist Church in Awendaw. God is Great. Without him, I would not be here and my life certainly wouldn't be as good as it is. Through God all things are possible. School My favorite times were the ones spent sitting during lunch talking with friends. At the "Old" St. Andrews H.S. on Wappoo Rd. it would be out on the Senior lawn under one of the oak trees. We would bring lunch, sit around in a group, share stuff with each other and just talk girl stuff the whole time. We never came up with a cure for the common cold, world peace or how to stop corruption in politics, but we sure could spend some hours talking about how one day we would. College I only attended TTC for the required time to complete the Emergency ...Expand for more
Medical Technician certification course and the necessary recertifications every few years. That was required to maintain my job with EMS. Once I started working there, I loved my job and never thought about moving on to anything else. Workplace Before going to work for Charleston County EMS I only had a couple of short term fill in jobs early in marriage. When I went to work for EMS in 1978 as an Emergency Services Dispatcher I knew that I had found the job of a lifetime. It was challenging, exciting, helped others, and was never dull. I can honestly say there was never a day that I ever got up dreading to go to work. If it had not been for the on the job injury and resulting complications that made it impossible to continue working, I would still be there now and I would stay as long as they would let me. I loved every minute of the time I was there and hated to have to leave. That was one of the worst days of my life when I realized that I could no longer "do the job". I think if I had finished enough time to retire and had made the decission to do that and get prepared for that things would have felt different. Instead, it feels like it was just taken right out of my hands, with no warning, like losing a cherished family member suddenly. It left a big empty spot in my life. Something I just was not prepared for. It's getting easier with each day that goes by. I fill up my life with family things and church things to keep me busy and with God providing me with things to do I will always stay busy.
