Here is a short history of the last 50 years. I attended Harvard College and Harvard Law School. Immediately after graduating from law school I began teaching law, first at Boston University and then at Harvard. I soon decided against an academic career, however, and began practicing law at Ropes & Gray in Boston. I left Boston to work with Senator Javits in the U.S. Senate, and from there I moved to the Office of the Solicitor General in the U.S. Department of Justice. The Solicitor General's Office was a great place to work. Our responsibility was to manage the federal government's litigation strategy and to represent the United States in cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. During my six years in the Office I rose to become Deputy Solicitor General and argued many cases before the Supreme Court. I had the honor and pleasure of working closely with Bob Bork when he was Solicitor General, and several of my colleagues in the Office remain my close friends today. I left the Office of the Solicitor General to become a partner in the law firm of Fulbright & Jaworski in Washington, D.C.
