Keith's Story

Here is a short history of the last 50 years. I attended Harvard College and Harvard Law School. Immediately after graduating from law school I began teaching law, first at Boston University and then at Harvard. I soon decided against an academic career, however, and began practicing law at Ropes & Gray in Boston. I left Boston to work with Senator Javits in the U.S. Senate, and from there I moved to the Office of the Solicitor General in the U.S. Department of Justice. The Solicitor General's Office was a great place to work. Our responsibility was to manage the federal government's litigation strategy and to represent the United States in cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. During my six years in the Office I rose to become Deputy Solicitor General and argued many cases before the Supreme Court. I had the honor and pleasure of working closely with Bob Bork when he was Solicitor General, and several of my colleagues in the Office remain my close friends today. I left the Office of the Solicitor General to become a partner in the law firm of Fulbright & Jaworski in Washington, D.C. I remained there for 17 years, representing major oil companies...Expand for more
in disputes with the Department of Energy and conducting appellate litigation, with some cases going to the Supreme Court. I tired of the full-time practice of law and retired to Palm Beach, Florida, in 1995. While in private practice I had organized a small limited partnership for making and overseeing investments for my family and friends, and I continue to manage that partnership. I very much enjoy the intellectual challenge of managing investments, and the past year, of course, has been especially challenging. In 1974 I married Renata Skuta, a graduate student from Busko Zdroj, Poland. We remain happily married and have two children. Our daughter, Emily, received her Ph.D. in biology from the University of Arizona this year and now has a post-doctorate research position affiliated with three Pacific Northwest universities. Our son, Alden, just graduated from high school and this fall will begin attending Reed College in Oregon. Our permanent home is in Palm Beach, but we have a second home in Bar Harbor, Maine, where we spend four or five months a year, escaping from the relentless Florida summer and its associated risk of hurricanes.
