Keith's Story
After graduation, I chose to remain here in Jonesboro and kicked around for a year mowing yards and taking life easy. In 1982, I got a job working at Western Sizzlin Steak House, starting at the bottom washing dishes but after a few years, I worked up to cook and then finally, meatcutter, a position I kept for almost 13 years. It was also during my time at Western Sizzlin where I met my future wife, Connie, and it's when I began my 2nd career as an EMT with Emerson Ambulance Service. I had always been interested in the medical field and in early 1989, I took the class and was hired by Emersons in August of 89. Now, here it is over 19 years later and I'm still working there and enjoying it very much.
By 1996, I began making plans for a career change, trying to get out of the restaurant field and into something with more opportunities. So, in August of 96, I was hired to work as a 911 Dispatcher at the Jonesboro PD. It was difficult to leave Western and all the friends I had made but I knew it was the right time to go and I cut my final steaks on Dec. 16th, 1996. By my account, in my 13 years as meatcutter, I probably cut between 1 and 2 million...Expand for more
steaks and had never lost a finger nor ever had to have stiches for a bad cut. After I left the job, it took me over a year before I could seriously eat a steak again.
So, I began my new job at 911 while still maintaining my job at Emersons. At the present, I am the First Shift Supervisor at 911, a job I don't take likely. It is very demanding and very stressful and it's not something just anyone can do. Working in the fields I do, I sometimes run into former classmates. I have even had people recognize my voice, even though we haven't spoken in more than 20 years. So here I am now,
26 years past high school and I have a beautiful wife and a great son and daughter. In 2008, both will be teens and I can already see through them what my parents saw in me at that age and it makes me try harder to be a good parent.
I also have been a Reserve Officer for JPD for the last 2 years and it has been quite an experience.
I have missed the last 2 reunions but I hope that whenever the next one comes around, I can make it then. Until then, if you look close enough, you might catch me driving the ambulance or yet, hear my voice the next time you dial 911
