Keith's Story
First Job
My first job was at Magic Mountain, where I got paid $1.65 to bus tables. The next year, I think I made $2.00 an hour, working at the Troll House Cookie Factory. The crew was fun, the girls were cute, and the ice cream was really good. They gave me a memorable send-off when I left for Ricks College in far-away Idaho.
LDS Mission and College
Seven months after beginning college, I left to serve a mission for the Mormon church in Argentina. Two years later, I returned to attend college at Brigham Young University, where I majored in Spanish and also studied Italian and Portuguese. I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1980 and attended graduate school for two semesters.
Military
After college, I joined the Army's linguist program. I attended the Korean Basic Course in Monterey from 1981-1982. I was assigned to the 125th M.I. Battalion, 25th Infantry Division from 1983-1985. On my first deployment to New Zealand, I was surprised to see Dan Leary, an old friend from Placerit...Expand for more
a JH. I deployed twice to South Korea for Team Spirit in 1984 and 1985.
Teaching Career
I taught for five years in California, mostly in San Diego and Imperial Counties, before moving to Utah in 1992. I taught Spanish in the Davis School District for 24 years, seven at Farmington Jr. High and 17 at Northridge High School.
Professional Organizations and Committees
I was the President of the Utah Foreign Language Association from 2003-2004. I have been chairman of two textbook adoption committees in the Davis School District. During my career, I also served on a national advisory committee for Holt, Rinehart, and Winston and I worked on the USOE committee on world language standards.
Hobbies
I've been hiking and mountain biking at Antelope Island State Park since 2004 and volunteered at the visitor center for four years; it's an awesome place! I'm fortunate to just live fifteen miles from the park. I have over 22K pictures on my flickr page. Check out Great Salt Lake Images dot com.
