Ken's Story

Old Friends! Although I've seen a few of you from time to time over the years, it has been very seldom and not for very long! So, I thought I would write a short bit to catch up anyone interested in what I've been up to for the past 40 years (I can't believe it has been that long). After graduating from DDHS, I started attending Portland State College. During this brief period of time, I was trying to go to school full time, work full time, and party full time. As you can probably guess, there just was not enough time in the day to do everything, so I cut back my college hours to part-time. It did not take Uncle Sam very long to send me a draft notice after I did that!! Well, I decided I would much rather do a hitch in the Navy than plod through the jungles in Vietnam so I joined up. My "hitch" lasted for 26 years. During that time, I saw many places all over the world, got married and had three kids, and had a lot of good (and not so good) experiences. After getting out of the Navy, I completed my college degrees finally finishing my MBA at the ripe old age of 51. College was a little different this time since I was only working full time while attending and not partying anymore (kind of boring, huh). I worked for a couple of high-tech companies here in the San Diego area where I ended up after the Navy. For one reason or another, both companies...Expand for more
folded up (not my fault, honest). After that period of commuting several miles every day, working long hours, putting up with employee issues and company politics, I decided I would re-evaluate my goals and decided to accept a position with a non-profit here in Coronado where I live. As the Director of Operations, I'm certainly not getting rich, but I feel it is a worthwhile organization (Drug and Alcohol Substance Abuse Prevention/Intervention) and my life is much more stress free. For enjoyment, I have a part time paid position at a local church as the choir director and I also sing with Pacific Coast Harmony, a barbershop chorus. One of these days, I'll probably get into community theater as I have always loved acting on stage but only got an opportunity to do that a few times during my Naval career. My wife, who I met 38 years ago while stationed in Albuqerque, New Mexico has been into ceramics for many years. She and my daughter just recently sold their "paint your own" studio here in Coronado and are now doing custom finished pieces and, I'm sure, will be very successful in that venture. My oldest son works for the City of San Diego and my youngest son is finally finishing up a degree in Mechanical Engineering at San Diego State University. Briefly, that is what I've been up to. If anyone wants to contact me, I would love to hear from you.
