Ken's Story

Life I left Chicago in June of 1981... and haven't returned other then for brief visits. I've been married for over 18 years and have three great children. We live about 70 miles north of San Diego in the city of Temecula. I retired from the Navy on February, 2007 with my ceremony on December 1st, 2006 onboard USS Midway in San Diego and I am looking forward to my second career! School What can a person say about Hubbard High School? At times it was a blast... only at times though... 75 percent of the time I could have thought of MANY better places to spend my time! There are only a handful of folks I keep in touch with... you know who you are and names need not be mentioned. To you, I appreciate and value your friendship. Your support and steadfast friendship through the years meant the world to me and I look forward to sustaining those friendships as we get older and more distinguished looking! Workplace United States Navy beginning in June of 1981. Actually, and in a technical regard, I was skipped school for a day in early September of 1980 and enlisted, spending my entire senior year in an element of the Naval Reserve, reporting in at a minimum of twice a month to a Navy office in preparation for active duty when I graduated. I did not attend the commencement ceremony for the graduating class of 1981, as I had left for basic training a few days before. The school was quite gracious in handing me my diploma a week before so I could meet my responsibilities to the United States Navy. (Little did I know it would be almost 27 years before I was no longer IN the Navy!!) I've swept floors, cleaned commodes, scrubbed decks, stood watches, did body work on aircraft for a while, maintained electrical systems including navigation, power generation systems, Automatic Flight Control Systems, engine systems and hydraulic systems as well as equipment cooling systems. I also was an Instructor teaching the aforementioned aircraft systems for a few years. I was assigned to to Headquarters, Navy Department in Washington DC as the senior Rating Assignment detailer responsible for the global assignments of Aircraft Electricians throughout the Navy. I was also the senior evaluator for all Navy and Marine Corps aviation organizational level activities east of the Mississippi river all the way to Baghdad. I finished my career as the Maintenance Master Chief for HSL-43 at NAS North Island... Ya' mean there is MORE to life than this!!???!!??? Military If you read the text below, you'll know what I have done, where I have been... What a ride... I don't think I would change a single thing... the experiences, the work, the misery at times, nothing... I doubt a...Expand for more
nything else I do in my life will meet the camaraderie, excitement, and honor of having been associated with the Navy and Marine Corps team for over a quarter of a century. I've deployed on several different type ships over the years... USS Midway (CV 41), USS Abraham Lincoln, (CVN 72), USS Constellation (CV 64), USS Horne (CG 30), USS Callaghan (DDG 994), and made smaller at sea periods on other ships, USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), USS Independence (CV 62), USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63), USS Coronado (AGF 11), and USS Mahlon S. Tisdale (FFG 27). I've been extremely fortunate to work with a lot of fantastic folks over the years. I was deployed to Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, Operation Restore Hope in Somolia, and most recently Operation Iraqi Freedom onboard USS CONSTELLATION and later in-country at Al Asad and Al Taqqadam (about five miles south of Fallujah), Iraq. I've been to about 38 different countries around the world and was stationed in Japan for three years as well. I had great leaders that I worked for and was honored to have been selected for promotion to Chief Petty Officer in 1992, Senior Chief in 1996 and the culmination of a lot of hard work by the folks I worked with and those that worked for me, when I was selected as a Master Chief Petty Officer in 1999. My shore tours include three separate Fleet Replacement Squadrons, an instructor tour, and a tour in Washington DC as the Aircraft Electrician's Mate Rating Assignment Detailer. As far as awards/decorations.. yeah... I got 'em... but, the Sailors and Marines that I have worked with earned 'em! To all the Sailors I have worked with over the years, GO Navy!! To all the Marines I have worked with, Semper Fi!! To both elite group of professional warriors, Thank You for providing the laughs, grimaces, heartaches, scares, fears, anecdotes, humor, and memories that will stay with me for a lifetime!!! To those brave warriors serving OUR country in the deserts of Iraq, the mountains of Afghanistan, the jungles of the Republic of the Philippines, and the chilling hillsides of Korea... My thoughts and prayers will remain vigilant with you and you SHALL ALWAYS have my respect and your sacrifices SHALL always be held in reverence. God Bless you. Know that I, and whoever reads this missive should know... it isn't the journalist that provides our Freedoms, it isn't the Judges, it isn't the politicians... it is YOU! The warriors on the front lines, standing watches aboard ships, eating the dust from the desert, taking mortar fire daily, dodging IEDs, and maintaining the aircraft that drop STEEL ON TARGET!!! I'll let you all know how the second career works out when I retire from it! Cheers! Ken
