Ken Decker:

CLASS OF 1963
Denver, CO

Ken's Story

After graduating from St. Joe's I worked for one year at Rocky Mountain Bank Note Company and then went to CSU, graduating in 1969. Then I had an opportunity to make a move to Ft. Myers, FL where I was living when Uncle Sam came calling and I was drafted into the Army.....basic training at Ft. Campbell, KY and advanced infantry training at Ft. Polk, LA. I then got the infamous orders to report to the Oakland Army Depot - every G.I. knew what that meant....Vietnam. And having an "infantry MOS", my fate was sealed. I'll never forget that first ride in a Huey - from the forward fire support base (LZ Center) to "the bush" to meet up with my unit that was already out on a "search and destroy" mission. Three weeks later, during a fire fight with North Vietnamese regulars, I was wounded when an NVA troop tossed a grenade at me.....welcome to the war, Ken!! So 14 months and a lot of body bags later, I got my freedom ride home and got out of the Army on Easter Sunday, 1971 at Ft. Lewis, WA. After 2 years living and working in Boulder, I went into the insurance industry in Denver and spent the next 30 years owning my independent agency "Veterans Insurance Services" in Lakewood and Littleton. Ken Ertle was one of my clients for a long time. I met my "China Doll", Shelley, and both she and my step daughter, Wei, moved from China to Las Vegas where I've been living for the past 10 years. One thing I learned about our "wonderful" government when it comes to marrying someone from another country, it likes to "kill trees". The paperwork is completely unbelievable, but in my case well worth it! I...Expand for more
've now been semi-retired for the last two years but have a great part time job as an "events worker" at the Thomas and Mack Center at UNLV. It's great to get paid to watch all the various events from sports to concerts. I also do some part time ushering at the Mandalay Bay Events Center for a private company that has a lot of the events around town. And MGM has just begun construction of a 20,000 seat arena just off The Strip so they'll be hiring soon also. That new arena will really bring in a lot of great events to work and there's a lot of speculation about an NBA or NHL franchise moving to town. Just have to wait and see about that. My step daughter moved back to China four years ago (she had met a young man just before coming to Vegas) and we just got back from 7 weeks in Guilin to attend her wedding. What a trip!!! Shelley and I are now planning on spending half of the year in Vegas and the other half in China. Maybe I'll even learn a little Mandarin - but probably not. What a difficult language. I have a friend here who is Mormon and did his mission in China - the church put him in language school for 8 months, 6 days / week, 10 hrs / day to learn the language. But it's surprising how many Chinese speak English - their government begins teaching English in the schools very early. Joe Chavez moved to Vegas a year ago and we live about one mile apart so we get together quite often. And my sister, Charlotte, also lives here and we do a lot of things together. This is a city that truly "never sleeps" - there is always something to do. So that's it for now. Ken Decker
