Ken's Story

Directly from Sunset I enlisted in the USAF in Sept as an Aircraft Loadmaster on C-141's. During that time I was able to visit and spend some time in many different countries and experience the different cultures, traditions and cuisine. In 1972 I was stationed in Viet Nam flying C-123's and then was sent to CCK Air Base in Taiwan serving in Det. 6, 8th Aerial Port (a Forward Combat Mobility Unit) spending more time in RVN than in Taiwan. I was injured in Thailand in late 1973 and med-evaced back to the States in mid-1974 and discharged in 1975. I messed around in odd jobs for about a year before working for a construction company out of Fremont. I stayed with them long enough to get my Journeyman's license in Carpentry. I then hired on with Chevron in the oil fields around Bakersfield, Ca. I also worked for Chevron in Colorado and Alabama. After 30 years with Chevron I retired as a Oilfield Safety Trainer and moved to Sonora, Ca. I was married in 1976 to a very loving young lady from Virginia. Unfortunately she passed away 2 months before our 30th anniversary from cancer. We were not blessed with any children. Now I am engaged to another very caring lady four years my junior. She has three children and seven grandchildren who have all accepted me as I am and have even started calling me Granddad. I consider myself a very lucky man for not only finding one special lady, but for finding two in my lifetime. I fought my demons with PTSD for several years before the medical community even knew what PTSD was. It was a rough road, but with the right help and support, I made it through. For those of you who knew my brother Andrew (class of 1971), an Army vet...Expand for more
, died in the Tacoma, Wa. area about eight years ago. My brother David (class of 1973), an Air Force vet, is a retired cop and living in the Phoenix, Az. area. Loves his kids and his Harley's! I am still doing well and really enjoying retirement. I call it the "Doing what I damn well please, when I damn well please to do it" years. A little bump in the road as far as retirement goes. I fought Kaiser for 3 years to get an MRI done on my knee. All they would do is a knee X-ray, give me some pain pills, send me home and tell me to deal with it. I changed to a PPO insurance June 2013 and within 2 mths I had an MRI done. Just as I thought, I had 2 torn Miniscus and some arthritis. Got my knee fixed in Aug 2013. In Sept 2013 I lifted a can out of the truck, about 15#, felt a twinge just above my navel, didn't think much about it. An hour later Linda was driving me to Emergency with the worst pain I had ever felt in my entire life. Turns out, Umbel hernia, got that fixed the same month. I knew I had a heart murmur since about '81 caused by a failing Aorta valve. My Cardiologist did a "routine" Angiogram. Not only was my Aorta valve ready for replacement but I also had 2 arteries 90+% plugged, one of which he called a "widow maker". I did not show any of the common symptoms. So, on Feb 28 2014 I went thru emergency surgery fixing the plugged arteries and replacing the Aorta valve. The worst part about the whole deal is that I am still very sore across my chest (May 2015) and have not been able to get into my boat at all this year. I'm a bit tired of just walking and resting. Start rehab next week. Stay in touch, drop me a line, I'd love to hear how y'all are.
