Ken's Story
Life
How does one go about synopsizing nearly 30 years of experience since graduating SMHS into only 4000 characters? I suppose some kind of list is called for:
1980: Married Beth Rader (thought I was doing the right thing)
1985: Divorced Beth, moved to Flagstaff, met Aileen Tonelli
1985: Married Aileen (and have lived happily ever after)
1986: Moved to Las Vegas where we lived an amazing life working for various casinos in a variety of positions.
I eventually finished my Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Studies in 1995. (Curiously enough, I was in a graduating class of 14; the second graduating class from UNLV's new Environmental Studies Program -- the first graduating class was only one student.)
I worked at Hoover Dam from 1996 to March 2001 as a Dam Tour Guide. Ask me anything about the dam...if I don't know the answer, I'll make something up -- you won't know the difference.
While we lived in Vegas, we helped found a Science Fiction club that has gone on to throw conventions, host international guests, and even started Reinassance Faires in the Valley.
In March 2001, I took an extremely lucrative job in Southern California at a big Environmental Consultantion Firm. I was involved with a number of military base closures up and down the west coast. Aileen and I bought a small horse ranch ...Expand for more
(3.25 acres in Yucaipa).
After 3 years, I moved to another, much smaller, environmental firm (still in the SoCal area) and worked as their office manager.
A shake-up in the company in March of 2005 left me unemployeed, but with great prospects. By assessing our financial situation, we realized we could cash in our chips (so to speak) and sell our ranchette at the height of California's latest real estate boom to make a very nice profit.
We've used those profits to move to the Ozarks (Flippin, in Northern Arkansas, to be specific). We bought 11.5 acres of woods (with deer, turkey, raccoons, rabbits, and cardinals), a big house with a separate workshop, garage, and studio.
Over a decade later things have changed just a bit. That nice place in the woods now belongs to someone else. We sold it for our purchase price, so we're feeling rather happy about that whole situation.
After 30 years of marriage Aileen and I realized we were growing, but apart, not together. Rather than make each other miserable, and after many years of working to make things better, we opted to make each other single.
Approaching my first decade of working for the state (Arkansas Game and Fish Commission) as an environmental educator/interpreter. I help people make that all-important connection between themselves and Nature.
