Ken's Story

I'm a Battalion Chief with Cal Fire (CDF) and have been a firefighter for most of my adult life. I have a wife (25 years) and two daughters, both in college. My oldest is a graduate student in a PhD program who just returned from a major archeological dig in the Sudan. She's majoring in Biological Archeology. The youngest is pulling a 4.0. and is currently pre-med. We'll see how that works out. My wife and I live in the Sierras, have a house on two acres of lawn, and are toward the end of a five year remodel. The original house was about 100 years old, so new stuff was needed. That being said, if any of you have done major remodels, you'll know that a protracted program like this one is about as much fun as having root canals done on all of your front teeth. As to me, after I left Brahnam, I went to SJ State for two years, quit that to become a deck hand on a three masted square rigged sailing ship, quit that to work for Windjammer Cruises in the Carribean, quit that because they treated us badly and ended up str...Expand for more
anded in Florida. Me and a partner decided that Florida was not a place for us, so we climbed onto bicycles and rode across the country, back to California (we actually ran out of money in Utah, but the story plays better with the transcontinental twist). I ended up at Lake Tahoe as a ski bum for four or five years, started a construction company there, got married for the first time, and bought a house about 600 feet from the west shore of Tahoe for $12,000.00 (1974). Sold it the next year for $24,000.00 (dumbest thing I ever did). I moved to the Nevada City area, got divorced, bumped around for awhile, started fighting fire again, and stayed with it. I got married again to my present wife in 1983. While the relationship has been stormy at times, it has endured. Anyone who could put up with me for the length of time that she has is probably qualified for sainthood, but that is a different story. Firefighting has allowed me to never grow up, a fact that either of my daughters (and wife) will readily attest to.
