Ken's Story
Life
I was a Navy brat. Born in California, had 1 older sister and 2 younger sisters. Lived pretty much every where there was a Naval Air Station, but seemed to keep bouncing back to Brunswick, GA. 1st, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 9th-12th grades.
Married India Rogers while I was attending FSU. Graduated from FSU and joined KPMG Peat Marwick's Greenville, SC office in 1976.
India and I had one daughter, Jessica in July 1978. We got divorced shortly thereafter. Jessica is doing great and has one daughter, Audrey Leigh. Now I am sure that those of you who have grandchildren think they are the brightest and most beautiful. And you are correct, with the exception of our granddaughter - Audrey. Grand children are God's gift for raising our own children.
Met a lovely woman, Cindy and married her in 1983. Best move of my life. We both had those 50/50 divorces... our spouses got all the assets and we got all the liabilities.
We worked hard and played hard - water skiing and sailing on Lake Hartwell, long distance traveling on our Harley Davidsons (I ride a Fatboy, Cindy rides a Duece), enjoying antique cars - racing and shows, generally we have a great time. We also volunteered for many of the festivals and events that make Greenville SC such a great place to live. If you've never been to Greenville, please don't miss one of the best downtown's in America.
I retired as a Partner with KPMG in 1998, and bought 50% of Garfield Signs and Graphics. My best friend and business partner, Mike Garfield, passed away unexpectedly in 2002 and Cindy and I ended up with 100% of the sign company. Garfield Signs and Graphics is one of the best architectural signs companies in SC, so other than working my behind o...Expand for more
ff this was not all bad.
Cindy left Marsh in 2003 to join Garfield... second best thing we ever did. We worked together and the business prospered.
For my 50th birthday, Cindy chartered a 54' sailing catamaran named Braveheart. Three of our favorite couples joined us for a week and we sailed the British Virgin Islands. We were all hooked... beautiful boat, beautiful location, great captain and first mate, gourmet chef who wore a bikini under her apron, great friends. Even in close quarters, not a cross word was spoken, not a cross word was even thought. What could be better?
Well, on the same day, August 12, 2005, a nice gentleman gave us an unsolicited letter of intent to buy Garfield Signs and Graphics and a nice lady signed a contract to buy our home... neither were on the market!!! So Cindy and I said YES!!! to both, bought a 42' Leopard sailing catamaran and named her "Meant To Be".
When we were in the process of buying the boat, we visited most every marina from Beaufort SC to Jacksonville FL. We visited Brunswick Landing Marina last, just to make sure we didn't bias our opinions, and were we surprised to see how perfect the marina is for a sailing catamaran. I think there are more sailing catamarans docked at BLM than all of the other marinas we looked at combined.
Cindy and I only lived one place after college, Greenville SC. We hated to leave Jessica, Audrey, and all of our friends in Greenville, but the thought of coming back to Brunswick was exciting. My dad and stepmom still live on St. Simons and we look forward to rekindling old friendships.
Now we're retired, and we plan to sail 7 months and travel in our RV the other 5 months. We love this country.
