Ken's Story

After four years at the University of Washington I spent another few years in a variety of jobs that finally led me to the nonprofit sector. I worked for United Way of King County from 1978 to 1984 both in fund raising and community affairs/government relations. I became the director of Planning, Allocations, and Community Services for United Way in Tacoma in 1985. That job led to my being hired by a private foundation, the Ben B. Cheney Foundation, in 1989 where I've worked since. I do a lot of presentations at nonprofit events and work one-on-one with a variety of organizations around capacity building and development. One of the highlights has been working w...Expand for more
ith the Tacoma YWCA in its campaign to buy and remodel an apartment building to relocate and expand the Women's Emergency Shelter. I was a member of the YMCA, both in Seattle and Tacoma, for over 25 years and played a lot of noon basketball over those years. In addition I played a lot of golf during the 1980s to early 2000s. I cut back on a lot of those physical activities around 2006 as a worsening kidney condition made it difficult to play at the level I wanted. That kidney condition culminated this past May 29, 2012 with a kidney transplant, thanks to my brother Tony (RHS Class of 1977). As I write this I'm 4 months out from the transplant and doing great.
