Ken's Story

My Life Story or "Snorkeling in the Sea of Life" The September after we graduated from high school I went to the University of Detroit in pre-dentistry. I didn't like it much so I dropped out after 1 semester and got a job. I took a few classes at Wayne county community college over the next couple of years. Along came the draft lottery and my birthday was given #32. Within a month I was down getting my physical. At the end of the day I was declared 4F, or physically unfit. 4F means that they have to draft women and children first; I've had 7 knee surgeries, 4 on the left and 3 on the right. The last was a total replacement on the left knee. The total replacement was the best thing I ever did. I worked, partied a lot, and got a little crazy. I met Millie Cannell (Class of 1968), settled down, and we were married in 1974. I put her through college (Pharmacy) and in the summer of 1978 I went back to college. This time I went into Engineering at Wayne State. I graduated with distinction in 1982 and went to work for IBM in Minnesota. I though Michigan was cold. My knees couldn't take it so in October 1983 I took a job at Sperry Flight Systems (now Honeywell) in Phoenix, AZ. I've been here ever since. In 1987, after 12 years of marriage, Millie and I got a divorce. Within a year I married again. Dianne and I just had our 25th wedding anniversary. Time sure flies. My career has been interesting. I have engineered many aircraft computers over the years; Worked at Motorola on Military projects, and even worked on the Iridium phone satellite system. In 1997 2 buddies and ...Expand for more
I started Real Time Consulting (Real-Time-Consulting "dot" com). We do embedded avionic systems, software, and hardware design for some of the world's finest Aerospace companies. We survived the downturn in early 2009 and are growing again. It's hard to believe that in April we will be in business 16 years. In late 2009 we diversified and created multiple divisions. We filed for our first patent and now are pending on 10 inventions. I'm out raising capital to fund all the stuff we want to do. This has been my biggest challenge to date. I have 3 grandchildren, 2 girls and 1 boy. I never thought I would be down on the floor at my age playing with Barbie's and little pet shop animals, but I look forward to every moment. These little ones have redefined my life. The oldest girl is now 9. My other granddaughter will be 9 next month and my grandson is 5. I use to be good at video games but I have now been banished from playing Skylanders with my oldest granddaughter because I get all her guys killed. I still kick her butt most of the time in Melee. I was last in Wyandotte a few years ago when my father passed away. I was amazed at how much the city has changed but it still had a lot of the unique things that I remembered when I lived there. Living in the desert has made me really appreciate Michigan's lakes and rivers. I can say that life hasn't been dull. I've been kicked in the teeth more times than I expected but still move forward. I'm about ready to finish my life's chapter on 2012 and am excited to see what 2013 brings. I wish everybody well, be safe, and take care.
