Ken (Wayne)'s Story
Good lord where to start.
Graduated (well, duh). Rhonda & I married 13 Dec 80 & I went off to the USAF 5 days later.
Basic Training: Lackland, TX. Dorm Chief (big deal)
Tech School (Personnel, what Human Resources used to be called) in Biloxi, MS. Rhonda had joined me, so I got to live off-base. Won the bet for being the first one in my flight to wear jeans, drink a beer, watch TV & get laid (NOT in that order).
1st permanent assignment was 317 TAW, (no hope) Pope AFB, NC. sang and danced in the black history week show my first year there, coached a little wrestling for one of the high schools. Mandi was born in July 81 & "Rocky" (Kenneth Wayne III) followed 11 months later.
A very short -1.5 yrs later I got an assignment to Rhein Main AB, GE to play football (semi-pro). After practicing for 4 or 5 weeks I realized I couldn't take it serious and (ahem) told them forget it. THAT went over well. Started performing in the base talent shows and directed a cpl of them. We took the "hard core" talent and basically set up a band with a dozen different vocalists (including my lovely wife). Rhonda got pregnant (well, it didn't "just happen", didn't think I'd have to explain), terrorists try to blow my office up & we left back for the states in 1986.
Back at Lackland AFB, TX. 3rd, last, final, no more, that's it Child (Cody) was born. After a cpl/few years, took my honorable discharge (surprising a few folks) and headed to Birmingham, AL to work in a...Expand for more
steel mill (UGH!)
In 1997 I went to GA to help start up a mill there. GREAT group of people, I KNEW the opportunity was there, so we packed it all up and took a permanent move to GA.
After running the furnaces for a couple years, I was offered an opportunity to automate our Melt Shop data and create a delay reporting system. Being smart enough to know that working with the systems and data kept me away from the heat & burns, DUH! I said hell yes.
Around the same time our site was purchased by Ameristeel. Under the new corporatation, I was left alone to continue my little project. The new company brought with them their business systems and I had to prepare & presnet a few presentations. I think too many people had the misconception that just because you sweat for a living means you can think & talk intelligently, so it took them by surprise that I could hold my own.
In Mar 2004, I was offered a position in the corporate Reliabilty & Maintenance office to coordinate our reliability process in north america. Lots of travel, meet alot of great people and hopefully some of my insanity gets them to think a little outside the box and push our processes.
I still live about an hour south of atlanta, GA. Rhonda and I are still the greastest of sweethearts and enjoy the times we get to travel for US.
Our 2 sons have moved out & moving on with their lives, oldest daughter still having to live under MY roof, so you can pretty well understand her pain.
