Kendall's Story

Life I'm sorry to have missed the recent class of '85 reunion which has put me in a sentimental frame of mind. I hope my classmates are living happy and fulfilled lives! I'm back in High School, but this time as a teacher. I teach art in a high school near Boulder, Colorado. At first it made me miss my teenage years but then I snapped out of it and realized I really wouldn't want to be that age again! I get plenty of drama just by listening to my students. I really do adore those kids! Apparently those people who seek careers working with kids have some unresolved issues dating back to that developmental stage. Perhaps I regret the trite topics I wrote about in Mr. McWilliams' journal, the damage I did to the hotel we frequented on ski club trips to Vermont, the fact that I didn't go to the senior prom with Jeff Wetmore, or the time I asked a popular kid how to work the keg. Maybe I just want to be in the yearbook. In any case, I'm working it out and I expect to graduate one of these years soon! Back in our day we would strive to be cool, awesome, and rad. Now the goal is to be pimp or tight. I guess it's really all the same. My students suffer through the self-conscious dread of not being cool while simultaneously maintaining flawless hairstyles and wardrobes (which will only end up looking silly in hindsight). To top it all off, they must find a balance between resisting authority and playing the game in an effort t...Expand for more
o prove that they are not really children in adult bodies. At the same time they are prone to fall into unrivalled fits of laughter with their friends. No wonder we all still have a love/hate relationship with our high school experience. Or is it just me? Anyway, since those days I've lived a pretty "tight" life! After majoring in Photography at Syracuse, I moved to Colorado with Kim Miller, my lifelong dearest friend. I played a lot and worked a little as a ski instructor, a rock climbing teacher, a ropes course facilitator (team-building programs for kids and corporate groups), and many other outdoor-related adventures. I went back to school to study art history and education. Most recently I married a wonderful man, Randy Laird, in the summer of '04. He is a Buddhist electrician, former psycho-therapist who loves astronomy, snowboarding, and motocross! We have a cute house in the mountains where we often see bears and hear mountain lions. Lately we like to hang out in front of the fireplace and laugh at ourselves as we begin to learn guitar! With each decade I feel more at peace with being human and less angry about life's little injustices. I strive to be compassionate and creative and I hope to be a mother and a writer. I still feel like a child in an adult's body and am still prone to fits of laughter with my friends. I'm not sure if anyone will read this, but if you do I'd love to hear from you, whoever you are.
