Kenneth's Story

I have hesitated to write this because of reservations about the internet, perhaps born of Baby Boomer reluctance. Who knows, I could wake up dead and pregnant with my identity stolen. However, our first (now 5 day old) grandchild is sleeping, so not much else to do. In my senior year at South, I was accepted into the Clemson School of Architecture where I spent my first year. After receiving the Architure Faculty Award for my efforts, I moved to pre-med and finally graduated with a BS in zoology. In an attempt to avoid the draft in the late 60's, I enrolled in advanced ROTC (certainly an oxymoron) which rendered me draft exempt and began my (almost) 30 year career in the USAF. After Clemson, I attended medical school at Wake Forest. In addition to medical studies, I met and married my wife, Carol (we will celebrate our 39th anniversary this year [2012]). We (it took both of us to survive my medical education) completed a residency in pediatrics at Travis AFB, CA where, not only did I learn how to treat kids, but also spent some time in the Napa and Sonoma Valleys discovering an enduring, but sober, love of wine. Oh, yeah, we made our daughter, Heather, there, also. My first assignment, as a pediatrician, was at Andrews AFB, MD. After 7 years there, we spent a phenomenal 5 years at RAF Lakenheath, England where we adopted our son, Daniel. That tour of duty ended when I was accepted into a 3 year pediatric endocrine fellowship at Walter Reed AMC in Washington, DC. The next 7 years, practicing pediatric endocrinology, were spent at Wilford Hall Medical Center, Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX. As the 30 year mark in my military career approached, it was time to look for a "real", civilian job. What Col. Dykstra found took us to Wic...Expand for more
hita, KS, where we have been ever since. As the only general pediatric endocrinologist in town, I found myself pretty busy, but challenged and (mostly) enjoying patient care. As 4 decades of lupus gradually took its toll on Carol's health, and with the arrival of a new pediatric endocrinologist in town, it was time to retire, which I did a year ago (January 2011). That lasted all of 5 months until I took a part-time (1 1/2 days a week) position at the Kansas University School of Medicine - Wichita. What a great way to practice medicine...no call, no administrative hassles, no inpatient care, and taking off to travel whenever I want, etc. Our daughter graduated from West Texas A&M and now lives in Austin, TX. While our son provided us with many challenges, as a National Merit finalist, he had a free (most expenses paid) ride to KU (Rock Chalk Jay Hawks) in Lawrence, KS. What parent wouldn't welcome that? Amazingly, he financed his post-graduation life successfully playing Texas Hold 'Em which he has now abandoned for the more, certain income provided by the work-a-day world. He and his fiancee have just moved to College Station, TX where she is completing her degree. Our future is less certain...where to "settle"? On the east coast with Carol's and my family, or in Texas, to be closer to our kids. Decisions, decisions... It has been fun to learn about my classmates' post-South lives. But, hardly anyone has any friends. Hopefully, that can be remedied. I keep my year books close at hand, but in the prophetic words of Joe Wash (The Eagles), if my memory isn't on the fritz (which it very well may be), said: "They're all so different, but I haven't changed." Now May 2016 and we moved back to NC (Matthews) and we are glad to be "home"
