Kenneth's Story

Life Life is full, rewarding, and busy. After moving about 40 times by age 36, I settled into life in the Atlanta suburbs. Working with great Georgia Tech students provides the rewards. Church and men's ministries provide the fullness. While I try to complete a doctorate, my wife Marie pursues her opera singing. These two activities are demanding second jobs that keep us moving at a pace typical of Atlanta lifestyles. Therefore, there are no kids - just a dog with those wonderful, loving eyes and a devoted spirit. I work as a career counselor, placing undergraduate students in co-op and internship positions around the globe. Working with freshmen and sophomores keeps me tuned in and makes me feel younger than my actual age. This career is no accident. Co-op helped me define my abilities and directions while in college. I am convinced it is one of the best ways for a student to learn and to get through college. My co-op job led me into human resources where I enjoyed college recruitment and the employment process. Ending people's careers through layoffs and plant closings caused me to opt out of the auto industry and return to the academic world when Georgia Tech called. Years have passed and thousands of students have come through my office, but the excitement is there with each new student. My passion is to help adults and students discover and act upon personal passions. As a Christian, my spiritual walk is life's most important driving force. My brother was blessed with a love for the people of Africa and he spends his life ministering in Guinea. I am like most others. I wonder what is my role... my ministry. When growing up, and probably complaining about another move, my grandfather told me "Bloom where you grow." Those words continue to ring in my head. In...Expand for more
2003, I was invited to something called Men's Fraternity at a local Baptist church. Husbands, fathers, sons, seekers, and skeptics would be well served to check out this ministry. It was founded by Robert Lewis in Little Rock, Arkansas and has gone global. It helped me to deal with some past resentments and learn more about myself. Lo and behold, my blinders are coming off as I see I am ideally situated at a college campus to help mold young people's career choices... and that means they are considering their life choices. In a lecture, Robert Lewis described a sail boat sitting in the water. It goes nowhere until the sail is lifted. That image held great power in my personal direction, so I made a poster to hang in my office. Over the image of a sail boat dead in the water are the words "Who am I? Why am I here? Where am I going?" It concludes with the words, "I must lift the sail." Yesterday an alumnus and a student opened up and spoke about the impact of that poster. Wow! What a reward when you realize you have a small part of God's greater plan. So - if you knew me at some time, you may think of me as a liberal, a conservative, an actor, a musician, a student, a story teller, a listener, a procrastinator, a go-getter or many other adjectives which would all be true in some context. You don't get to be this age without many experiences and my co-workers seem to think I have had more than the norm. That is why I say life is full. I will never stop learning. Even during my hour-long commutes I listen to audio lectures on diverse topics from The Teaching Company. Libraries and walks in the woods provide some of the best times for discovery, but sitting by the pool with friends or e-mailing long lost acquaintances yield memorable moments. Look me up.
