Kenneth's Story
Life
My life since high school has been pretty much uneventful. I went to the University of Wisconsin on a full ROTC scholarship. Around my 2nd year I changed my major from Astrophysics to a double major of Math and Computer Science after realizing that the Navy wasn't going to let me work at the Naval Observatory (they are good at telling you what you want to hear.) I spent 5 years on nuclear submarines based in Hawaii. My training as a nuclear engineer pretty much defined my career since then. In 1983 I left the Navy and moved to San Francisco, got married, had two boys, and worked for a bunch of different firms in nuclear power, engineering and computers. I got my MBA in the late 1980s. In 1991 I moved to Charlotte, NC with the Electric Power Research Institute where I have been since. While I didn't achieve my yearbook ambition of astrophysics, I do teach the local 4th grade class every year on stars, star charts and constellation mythology; a go...Expand for more
od compromise.
I have continued my family's music tradition with my two sons playing trumpet and trombone. I played French Horn through college but didn't play again until my oldest son started playing trumpet. I have played a few duets (on the trumpet) with my youngest to give him some variety in his practicing, but I don't spend much time with it at all.
My other passion in high school was Ultimate Frisbee, which I played competitively for Wisconsin. We were ranked in the top ten in the country in 1978. I continue to teach all the neighborhood kids how to play and hope that my kids play in college. They both have mean forehands with great accuracy.
I am ready to retire at any time, I just need someone to give me a Million $. (Isn't there a Steve Martin joke about this.) I wish someone at high school told us that you should pick your profession carefully because 30-40 years is a very long time doing one thing. I expect to change again real soon.
