Kenny's Story

Life Life is good! After HS, went off to play baseball at Glendale CC, followed by a short stint at Cal Lutheran University. Alas, I discovered Malibu Beach & beach volleyball (in the days I could wear a Speedo and not be laughed off the beach :-); hence, my scholastic inactivity (beach vb & baseball practice didn't count as credit) prompted a special welcome letter in 1971 from "Uncle Sam" who said he had a warm place for me to sleep, all the good food I could eat as well as 30 days paid vacation a year. What a deal! So for over 32 years I labored for this fine company called the US Army. Along the way, earned a BS (Business Admin) from Arizona State, a MS (Business Management) from Webster University (St Louis, MO), and a 2nd MS (Strategic Studies) from the US Army War College (Carlisle, PA). I was lucky enough to have worked my way through the ranks from Private to my final rank of Colonel. The US Army, in its infinite wisdom, was not crazy enough to make me a General. I mean, our country's national security largely depends on decisions organizations such as the Army makes, so you that know me completely understand that the Army made a wise decision :-) Seriously, I count it one of my greatest blessings to have been privileged to serve this great nation over those 32 years. Those of you who happen to read this, don't forget to thank a soldier, airman, sailor, marine, and coast guardsman for what they are doing now in the defense of our country in her hour of need. We owe these soldiers a great deal of gratitude for their selfless sacrifices. Remember: "People sleep peaceably in...Expand for more
their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf" (George Orwell). Also, along the way have gotten married and have a beautiful 23 year old daughter. I retired from the Army in February, 2004 and have now settled back in Phoenix. I look forward to seeing any and all of our classmates who still might be living in the Valley and renewing old friendships. Hope to hear from some of you guys soon. Workplace After a year of retirement & a year teaching 2nd graders, I foolishly allowed myself to be recruited for a position putting my former skills to work. In May, 2006 I went to Afghanistan and had all kinds of fun dodging IEDs, suicide bombers, landmines, snipers, an occasional rocket attack and Taliban ambushes. Aaahh, it was so pleasant to get back in the fray. Seriously, it wasn't that bad and the work we did/continue to do in Afghanistan will pay off in the future for both Afghanistan and the U.S. I left Afghanistan the latter part of 2007 and settled back into retirement life in Phoenix, where I helped coach high school baseball and girl's golf at Deer Valley High School with my brother Jimmy, who taught and coached there at Deer Valley. Military Uncle Sam said "come on down" in Oct, 1971. Liked it so much I made it a career. 32+ years later I entered the US Army retired rolls as a Colonel on 1 March, 2004. After living across the United States, Europe, & Ukraine over the last 32 years, I settled down back in Phx; however, I went braindead in May, 2006 volunteering to go help out in Afghanistan. Remember, I never claimed to be very bright.
