Kerri's Story

Life Life has been a roller coaster and the dips have been pretty low but one can't appreciate the mountain tops without the valleys. I am divorced but have raised 6 kids single-handed and even though it was tough going at times I consider I did make "lemonade out of the lemons". Now with all the kids off my hands I have time for myself and the things I enjoy. I love animals and have great fun with my Cornish Rex cats and Italian Maremma dogs. Sad to say I have found animals to be a good deal more loyal and "fair dinkum" than people in most cases. I do not suffer fools gladly and have no time for people who would rather do others a bad turn than a good one. At this time in my life, I have returned to swimming coaching but don't do the amount of hours I used to. Having been Curator of a Museum of Childhood for about 12 years or so, I have retained the majority of the collection so live surrounded by wonderful toys. I am passionate about antique toys and occasionally carry out private commissions in restoration. There are over 35 dolls houses in my home so I rent a 4 bedroom house just to house them all. I still conduct occasional viewings of the collection. After a very eventful life which thrust me into the public eye on more than one occasion, I succombed to the request of certain individuals and finally penned my autobiography. It is a no holes barred story of my journey up to this day. In many ways it was a cathartic exercise and an empowering one to be able to tell MY story. I expect a pulication date within the next 18 months but the hard part is complete. After a life time of abuse and betrayal, I imagine there will be a few people more than a little nervous about the revelations within. I enjoy driving my Ford Capri which is the most reliable and fun car I have ever owned. (It is my "pretend Alpha Romeo".) With no kids to ferry around it is ideal for me and handles like a dream. It is suited more for country than city driving but we compromise She gets me around on the mundane trips and I take her out for a long drive as a reward! I am VERY new to computers and HATE technology but have been thrilled at being able to catch up with so many of you. I am really enjoying the renewal of old friendships - you fill the spaces in my day. Thank you. My dream is to one day own a house in the country with a few acres so I can be surrounded with peace and quiet. I live in hope also of returning to Italy (which God clearly made first and then ran out of ideas for the rest of the world . There is, in my opinion, no more beautiful or exciting place). I am learning Italian just in case some great guy comes into my life and whisks me off to Tuscany! I have stayed very fit and have not yet felt the need to slow down. It will probably hit me when I least expect it. I am a huge Gene Hackman fan and like nothing better than to kick off the shoes, grab a glass of good wine, and watch one of my collection of over 60 of his movies. School When I was informed that I had won an AFS scholarship to study in the US for a year, I was thrilled. (Pennsylvania! I didn't even know where it was!) Of all the Australians who came to your country that year, I was one of the youngest and at 16 was far too young in my opinion, to have undertaken such a challenge. I was very frightened and apprehensive and cried myself to sleep many a night. Because I spoke English and looked pretty much the same as the rest of the the kids, the...Expand for more
re was always an expectation that fitting in would be easy but it was not so. Our cultures were quite different and I found the pace of American life very frightening. My clothes were deemed unfashionable by some so I quickly had to change the way I dressed, spoke etc to fit in. If it hadn't been for the wonderful friends in my class at East Penn, I couldn't have survived. Your football and baseball were new to me and I quickly became a fan and to this day never miss telecasts of the big games. One incident that stands out for me is when Mr. Peterman, (the home room teacher) kindly invited me to bring an Australian flag into the classroom so that I would feel more "comfortable" each morning as you all swore allegiance to your own flag. Apparently when some parents became aware that there was a "foreign" flag on the wall in the classroom, there were complaints and demands for its removal - but the school stood firm and the Australian flag hung proudly in that room for the duration of the year. It is clearly visible in some yearbook photos. That consideration meant the world to me and remains special to me to this day. I will never forget the wonderful Mr. Barnes who taught me about patriotism - something Australians didn't take very seriously in those days. He remains one of the most special people I have met in my life. One unforgettable moment came in French class when the first snowflake was sighted out of the window. I had never seen snow in my life and when the wonderful Mrs. Blessing became aware that I had not seen snow before, she stopped the class to allow me to go the window with the other students and witness my first snowfall. And oh, those kind ladies in the cafeteria!! They always found a way to sneak a little extra on to my plate!! It was those little kindnesses that have never been forgotten - just ways that some folk found to make me welcome in their own special way. I sure miss their cooking!! School life in the US was so very different than my own country and the culture shock was unimaginable. Some of the best times were when I was invited to speak to some of the junior grades. Questions like "How long have you been speaking English?" and "Do you have a pet kangaroo back in Australia?" made me laugh. What a great bunch of kids they all were. Rehearsals for the Senior Class Play and the Operetta were some of the funniest and best times and I have never forgotten them. One thing I could never get used to was the "informality" of the classroom. In Australia, even when the signal came that the time for the class was over, no one was allowed to move or stand until the teacher dismissed us formally even it it meant that we were late for our next class (and we often were). When everyone just stood up and rushed out of the class when it was over in the US, I sat frozen in shock!! And that crush in the corridors !! I have always considered it great training if I ever decide to take part in the "running of the bulls" in Italy! The spirited debates in the classroom, laughter in the cafeteria, and occasional "brawl" out the front of school always made the days fun. Attempting to continue with my Australian studies by correspondence as well as my US schoolwork was very stressful especially as the work was so very different, but when the time came to leave East Penn, it was one of the saddest days of my life. I have never forgotten any of you or the welcome you gave this girl from "Down Under". First kiss? You'd never guess!
