Kerry's Story

Ahem,,, the "then" photo was taken nearly 3 years after HS, and I'm not included in the yearbook,. The "now" photo was taken in 2019 in front of my 42' cutter in SF. Attended Stanford part-time the last year or two in Computer Science while at Aragon and continuing on to USF. I was a library nerd that liked motorcycles and computer science. No girlfriends; only friends were bikers and techno-geeks. It was funny when I had to prove I was a student of class of 1970 to obtain a 30th reunion invite, and even my name was not in the collage of our class at the last reunion, nor in the yearbook. I was quite unremarkable, deservedly so <haha>. Certified in scuba diving in 1970 with over 3,000 hours underwater, and joined a private research boat in Micronesia for 2 years of sailing and diving. I worked at Xerox PARC in plasma sciences in the 1980s. Then off to Thailand/Singapore for 12 years to cofound a materials science analysis laboratory, the only independent lab in SEAsia at the time, with my ex, for which I received a royal medal from the king of Thailand. I only worked for others for 4 years after graduation, and then myself the next 40 years. Moved back to USA in 2000 and co-founded Vivotech as a CTO, a mobile phone and contactless credit/debit card innovator and the first company to introduce mobile NFC payments with my dozen patents, and then founded QSecure as a CTO, a dynamic magnetic stripe credit card with nano/micro technology. I raised $149Mn and sold $250Mn of terminals and phone provisioning software as the first company to introduce mobile payments in the USA, UK, and Singapore. Apple and others licensed the technology and I saw a Vivotech reader at a PG&E CNG gas station in 2023 and a London taxi with a Vivotech terminal, one of over 1Mn sold, in 2022! I've enjoyed being an inventor on about 50 patent filings, many issued and some pending in materials science/nano-tech structures, mobile contactless payments, cryptography, mobile device security, and electronic data cards. arried twice, visited about 85 countries diving and adventure traveling, living abroad in Thailand and Singapore for over 13 years, I commissioned a 59' ketch to be built and sailed her 6 years later on the Pacific Cup race to Hawaii and return. I learned to fly and obtained private, commercial, and certified flight instructor FAA licenses in rotary-wing aircraft, and designed 1 small experimental helicopter as a university project where I taught aeronautical engineering. I also assisted the Royal Family of Thailand for secret service aeronautical and a computer engineering projects, receiving a royal decoration. My first home was in Cupertino 1978 and I'm living in Portola Valley the past 22 years (as of 2023) with my GF, a professor of biochemistry at Stanford. I managed to work very very hard and raised over $149M for my last two companies that have employed ~ 140 engineers and scientists for over 15 years.. I still have a 42' cutter in SF, as of 2023, and I sail often, volunteering to teach sailors in the galeforce winds of the SF Bay. A 23&me test in 2020 revealed I had 2 half-sisters (same dad), born and living in London! One has an Oxford degree in biochemistry, same as my gf that has a PhD, and works in mobile cryptography and security, same as me! It's great getting to know them, and learn my biodad was a CIA agent in the 60s and 70s, working on the secession of Singapore from British rule. I can still wear my Aragon Dons sports jacket at ~6'1" and 170# due to genetics and daily 1 hour lap swimming the past 30 years;. Great to see everyone at the 30th reunion and it was so fun to learn of your experiences in life, including some amazing stories! It's unfortunate that most classmates don't leave a review of their lives the past 50 years,,, it's almost an epithat by now for some, and many have certainly led very interesting lives, no doubt!!! Life is good in most regards, with lots of troughs of disillusionment and heights of ecstasy! I hope yours has been rewarding and rich in your own experiences, family, and happiness!
