Kevin Bohm:

CLASS OF 1983
Austin, TX

Kevin's Story

Hmm, somehow this is open and free...I've never subscribed, but God knows I get plenty of junk e-mail from this web-site. I graduated mid-year (Jan. 1983), but attended the May graduation. I started working as a clerk at the IRS on the same day I graduated. I've been there all this time and now I'm an analyst there, so I guess it proves you can start from the bottom and work your way up. I also started attending the University of Texas on the SAME day I graduated from Johnston and started IRS. I only lasted about one year at UT. I guess I tried to overload and do too much with working and all and just wasn't really well prepared, but it all worked out OK after all. I was married in 1985 and have two sons from that marriage, Hunter and Trenton. My ex-wife and I were married for 10 years and the boys stayed with me after we divorced. I have remarried and we're going on 12 years and I have another son, Spencer who's now 7 years old. Hunter graduated from Hays H.S. and was named on the All-State 4A football team, could have played at 3-4 universities, but didn't want to move far away, so attends Texas State University. He was also captain of the basketball team in his senior year...total opposite of my high-school time. Trenton is now at Hays H.S. and is on the basketball team and in the marching band, they are begging him to play football, but he doesn't want to. We live out near Hays H.S. and probably pretty much have a boring life---sometimes I see Michael Dell who is about our age and wonder what I did wrong.... Just a side note...not that I'm STILL bitter...but I was one of the people who they forced busing onto. We weren't very well off, so rather than let me go to Crockett H.S. which was about 1 1/2 miles away I had to go to Johnston because of some do-good judge. I was in the Crockett band and at that time it was a good school with a top ranked band, I was so hurt to have to leave something I was finally good at and I never participated in anything at Johnston. I feel bad for the folks who lived in that area and I'm sure they had a bad deal in the past but it wa...Expand for more
s wrong what they did those of us who had to be bused. I'm glad some of the kids tried to make the best of the situation, but I never had the heart for it, so that's why I graduated early. That episode in my life made me decide I would never send my kids to the Austin ISD, so we moved out here to the Hays district. My kids have/had the most wonderful high school experience ever, having never gotten the chance to do so myself I was so happy for them. I would never allow my children to have to go through what I had to go through. I hate to say this out loud, but I still feel ashamed of where I was forced to go to school. Maybe it was good though, because it helped motivate me to make sure at least my kids didn't have to go through that. I did notice at school all the ethnic groups STILL tended to keep to themselves (white, hispanic, black), so I don't think the integration did anything useful, and only served to make all of us miserable. Maybe I did learn eventually the people I tended to dislike were intolerant people (against race and one's sexuality), and I cannot stand truly ignorant people, no matter their color. I would say and believe I am a very non-prejudiced person...maybe that's what the deal was about after all, I don't know. I went to the 20th anniversary reunion, but will never go to another. I guess I realized those reunions are for the popular people, pretty much at the exclusion of everyone else. So again, thankfully my boys have had such a wonderful high school experience...I guess they'll have some good reunions to go to. I hope I haven't offended anyone, I just felt like ranting and getting something off my chest out of curiosity to see if anyone felt the same. Not like I'm going to be nominated for the Supreme Court or anything, and hopefully I haven't said anything wrong here. Anyway, I don't know why this is open or free today, but thought I'd take advantage of it, I probably won't ever check back here. Ah hah, not true I am checking today (October 21, 2008) Greg Whalen, where are you??? webebohm(at)hot mail ---clever avoidance of the censor.
