Kevin's Story

My story by Kevin Clark The answer to the eternal question, "is there life after high school?", is a resounding yes. The answer to the modern question, "is there life during high school?", remains to be solved. High school, for me, was a difficult time with not a lot of life in it. Most of the time, I felt like I was dying. Dying of boredom; dying from the suffocation of absurd authoritarian rule; dying from exposure to chronic stupidity, apathy, and low expectations. As many of you know, I moved to Minnesota for my sophomore year, then back to Aurora Central for my Junior and Senior years. Things were different in the land of snow and ice and really big mosquitoes. I spent a year as a Minnetonka High School "Skipper" (whatever that is). Our mascot was a blue octopus. What's up with that? At heart, I was still a Trojan. As Nietsche said, "What does not kill me, makes me stronger." Well, for me, high school left me feeling very strong because it nearly killed me. Meanwhile, I believe it was Proust who said something to the effect that "suffering helps us grow." Since our high school days, for many of us, are our prime suffering years, boy, do we grow. After high school, I attended the University of Denver. I thought I wanted to be a doctor, but after working at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, I decided to pursue a different path. I was blessed to be able to study abroad in England for my junior year. I attended the University of East Anglia in Norwich. Julian of Norwich watched over me that year, so I was in good hands. I also had a chance to travel to the continent and saw Paris, Rome, Genoa, Florence, Pisa, Venice, Munich,...Expand for more
Vienna, Salzburg, Amsterdam, and parts of Belgium. What a great experience! I graduated with a degree in History and minors in Engllish and American Studies, Psychology, Biology and Chemistry. After that, I attended seminary at Denver Seminary. I earned a Master of Divinity degreein 1992. After seminary, I was called to serve at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Salem, Oregon, where I worked as Associate for Youth Ministries for 3 1/2 years. While in Oregon, I had the opportunity to pursue chaplain training through a chaplain training program called CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education). I did mine at the Oregon State Hospital, the state psychiatric faciility. One interesting side note is that Oregon State Hospital is the location where they filmed the classic movie, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" starring Jack Nicholson. My wife, Cheryl and I, moved back to Denver with three small boys and no job in the summer of 1995. I found a job working as a chaplain at Porter Hospice. Within a year, I was working at the Hospice of Metro Denver (now The Denver Hospice). I worked as chaplain, grief counselor, and manager of the Grief Center at The Denver Hospice. In January 2009, I was laid off along with several other staff at The Denver Hospice. Fortunately, I was able to fiind a new job as a chaplain at HospiceCare of Boulder and Broomfield Counties. I currently work there in a new position (got a promotion!) as Director of Clinical Services in their Boulder office. Cheryl and I live in Centennial. Our three boys are Andrew (22), Matthew (18) and Aaron (16). That is a brief outline of my story. What's yours? I welcome questions about me or my story. Shalom!
