Life - Update
Currently Co-owner with son - Ascendgence, LLC - tactical online marketing, viral campaigns, consulting. Chair for nonprofit PTB Project. (see w w w dot p i m p t h i s b u m dot c o m). Five kids from 26 to 12 years old. Three grand kids.
Way too busy with business, nonprofit, church, Boy Scouts at 56 yrs. Next post may be my obit;) Katy Texas is where I reside. I think about Colorado all the time, but kids are all deeply rooted here so not much chance of ever getting back there to live. Mom is still there at 74.
I think about old friends often and the opportunities I squandered as a kid. Don't you wish you knew then what you know now?
I was class 72 - so here is what's happened since -
I had a small nursery retail lot in 1973 at Academy and TGap. My partner and I drank it into bankruptcy. Spent a few years in a band called Farquars. I don't remember those years very well. One of my fellow band members and I came up with a musical product idea and moved to the Dallas area to be near our two main distributors. We settled in Denton Texas. After too many years of wild parties and lost days I had pretty well figured out what exactly does not work in life. In 1979 I joined the Morman church and the fog began to lift. I married my wife in the Manti Utah Temple, in 1981 meeting her at church in my Denton ward. We had Kelly in 82 and Sean born at home in 84, both in Denton. I opened a ceiling fan store - it seemed an obvious choice in Texas. In 1986 I sold the store and moved to Arizona to open another store - Arizona seemed an even more obvious choice for fans. I sold that business after the first year as I couldn't stand the thought of dragging my butt through another 180 degree attack.
I guess my experience as an entertainer and a fan huckster paid off because a member of my church in Chandler Arizona asked me to help him with sales in his startup software company and he was even going to pay me - whoot whoot!. efore I started work. In 1988 Virginia had our third child, Summer at home. I helped my boss redesign his business model and things really took off. In 1989 I helped my boss sell his business to a large acquirer and we all lived happily ever after. I was bored and took a job as VP sales for another startup in San Francisco. We were there for the big quake in 1989 - that's a another chapter by itself.
From mid 1989 to 2002 I lead sales for 8 startup software or internet companies. Five were successful and three bit the dust. Along the way we moved back to Texas - Katy Texas. In 1990 Virginia popped out number 4, Ian at home in Denton Texas. In 1996 Hyrum Spencer Dolan the caboose - the grand finally was born at home in Katy Texas. In 2002 I went to work for LexisNexis as a regional VP sales. The longest job I ever had with an established (not a startup)regular company. Last year I couldn't stand the stability so I went to work for another startup. Craziest people I ever worked with - In January my son, who has become rather well known as a search engine expert, and I started Ascendgence, LLC. Sean now 24 has been involved in charity work since he was very young (we have all been active in charities and community service projects). We decided to do a viral marketing campaign to showcase our abilities and give us a referencable white paper to help to get our business moving. Sean insisted that if we were going to do such a campaign pro bono that it should benefit someone in need. That is how we became involved in the PTB Project. Today we are building the business; finishing a documentary; negotiating a reality TV project; releasing our first viral music video next week. My wife is the Relief Society President in our church ward. I am in the High Priests leadership. I also work with the Boy Scout troop.
