Kevin's Story

Life While an undergraduate at Stanford University, Kevin Rafferty studied architectural theory and history, as well as fine arts and photography. While pursuing a Masters Degree in Architecture at the University of California at Los Angeles, Rafferty was introduced to computer graphics, and very quickly realized its importance as a facilitator of artistic expression. In 1982, Rafferty left his career as an architect to join startup visual effects Studio in Culver City. That studio was Digital Productions. There, he was Head of the Design and Modeling department during the production of such groundbreaking work as "The Last Starfighter," and "2010: The Year We Make Contact." This was the beginning of what is now 24 years of experience in the realm of modern Visual Effects. Rafferty stayed with Digital Productions till the studio shuttered its doors in 1987, accumulating experience on both feature films and commercials, including the Clio Award winning "Sony Walkman" and Chevrolet "Astro Orbit" fully CG commercials. In 1990, Rafferty helped form the Southern California unit of Pacific Data Images. Through 1992, he was part of PDI South's leadership team, creating visual effects for feature films such as "Batman Returns," "Toys," "Cliffhanger," and "Hearts and Souls." In 1993, Rafferty was asked to join the leadership team at Industrial Light and Magic. While at ILM,...Expand for more
he supervised many feature films and commercials, carrying titles of Computer Graphics Supervisor, Lead Computer Graphics Supervisor, Associate Visual Effects Supervisor, and Visual Effects Supervisor. His feature credits include "The Flintstones," "Casper," "Dragonheart," "The Lost World: Jurassic Park," "Deep Impact," "Star Wars Episode One: The Phantom Menace," "The Perfect Storm," " The Mummy Returns," and "Men In Black II." His commercial credits include award winning spots such as "Budweiser: Come Home," and "Gatorade: Lions, Colts, and Bears." By the time Rafferty joined DreamWorks Animation Studio in late 2001, his Visual Effects experience had already spanned 20 years. At DreamWorks, he was called upon to join a leadership team tasked with starting up, staffing, and helping lead the new CG unit at the Glendale studio. He fulfilled his role as Lead Computer Graphics Supervisor on "Shark Tale," and continued on as Visual Effects Supervisor for the added footage for the release of the "Shark Tale" DVD. Rafferty teamed with The Orphanage in San Francisco as Visual Effects Supervisor to supervise a Korean creature film entitled "The Host". The film has broken all Korean box office records, and has garnished many awards. He most recently finished principal photography for the Fox film, "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer," due in theatres June 15 2007.
