Kevin's Story
Life
I currently own a house in Las Vegas. I have been in Vegas since the summer of 2002. It is a great place to be for a single guy in his twenties. Even though I have not lived it up like many others, I still enjoy it. With the exception of going to play poker, there is very little reason for me to go to the Strip and visit the casinos.
For the last two years I have been living with my brothers, but Dave just moved to Texas a couple of months ago. Since I am no longer a full-time teacher, I only work 18 hours a week. So basically I am a slacker at this point in my life. However, my first three years out here I worked hard. I was a full-time teacher dealing with 45 students in a class (a little bigger than classes in Wayland). I also taught up to four nights a week at UNLV, tutored students for proficiency exams, worked on TV doing math problems, worked as a security guard for a while, and taught summer school. Also during this time I completed one full Master's degree and nearly completed a second Master's degree.
Now that I am a slacker, I spend most of my time meeting up with friends or playing poker. And I have been playing a lot of poker. Vegas is getting a little old though. I am currently making plans to move up to Portland sometime within the next year.
College
I spent four rather uneventful years at Geneseo. My freshman year I lived in the dorms and managed to go through three roommates. My first roommate was 28 years old at the time and was a religous fanatic, but he left when he got an RA position. My second roommate got kicked out after receiving a 0 GPA becaus...Expand for more
e he spent all of his time on an online sex chat room. That led to some uncomfortable nights and I ended up sleeping in other peoples rooms quite often. I picked up my third roommate after he left his drug addict roommate who turned into a stalker of sorts. If our room was not locked at all time his old roommate would come in and steal stuff. My sophomore year was not a whole lot better as I lived in a suite with three other guys. Two were obsessed with an online video game and Dragon Ball Z. My roommate I liked, but he snored so loud that I often slept in the community room. After those two years I moved out of the dorms and rented a room in a house just off campus and lived with 8 others. That was much better.
I would say the best time I had at UNLV is when I studied overseas for the winter term. I spent 22 days enjoying Italy. I can't wait to go back.
I managed to graduate with my degree in mathematics putting forth very little effort. My GPA was not the greatest, but that little piece of paper got me the job I wanted so I was happy. If I had it to do over again I would like to think I would try harder and try being more involved, but I doubt that would happen.
Workplace
After I graduated from SUNY Geneseo in 2002 I moved to Vegas to become a high school math teacher. After three years of teaching junior high and high school I decided that that was enough for me and I left the school district. I did however hold on to my other teaching job. I also teach at UNLV as a part-time math instructor and have been there for three years. I am currently searching for something new to try.
