Kevin's Story
Another reunion has come and gone and it really hurt to miss yet another as I often wonder what happened to so and so, where they are and what their life turned out like for them... are they happy? Did they live their dreams? You all know what I'm referring to I'm sure... Sometimes the face af someone I passed in the hall at Fletcher that I never took the time to get to know pops into my head and I regret that all the reunions have come and gone without me there.
I left the beaches so long ago drawn by the lure of adventure and discovery, both of the world and myself. Dozens of countries later and the desire for adventure is stronger than ever. Where I've been, the people met and the vistas seen only fuels the desire to see what's over the next horizon, what the locals have cooking on their fires and how their lives may change my view of humanity and myself.
But ,it all came with a price; that is not really having a place that I could say was MY home. Although my childhood and most all the experiences that made me who I am were spent at the beaches I had to leave to understand where I fit in in the big scheme of things.
Fresh out of high school during my commercial snapper fishing days I had the pleasure to work for the great Captain William C. Aley III, First Mate Mike Diorio (Who later married Kim Wood) and a Veteran of the WWII South Pacific theatre named Calvin (who flew 25 missions as a tail gunner in a Dauntless Dive Bomber against the Japanese Navy and obviously lived to tell about it) on the “Restless” out of Mayport. This was the best time of my life (work wise) diving most days at least once to shoot the fish that wouldn’t bite our hooks. We dove on sunken ships (An LST sunk by the Navy was one of my first dives on the Restless and one of my all time favorites), tugboats (Paul Mains was a tug and barge sitting on the bottom like they were on the surface during t...Expand for more
he storm when that sunk still connected by the cable), airplanes and fighter jets (Most had orange wingtips because they were trainers).
From there I went on to commercial diving school and deep saturation diving in the oil & gas industry. But, the deaths of two of my diving “Gurus” made me rethink my priorities and I drifted away to eventually end up in the merchant marines along with my brother Robert. We both traveled the world oceans sometime on the same ship and sometimes not but always connected with a “Radar Love” (we called it)... One time in 1978 we were both on 12-4 watch on LNG Tankers running between Indonesia and Japan. About 2:00 in the middle of the night, my ship the LNG Libra was southbound towards Bontang Indonesia one day out of Nagoya in the ship lanes off of the Philippines, one of the busiest lanes in the world with ship traffic heavy 24/7/365. Our job was to call out lights coming over the horizon to the 3rd officer, and as I stepped into the wheelhouse from the wing of the bridge to inform the 3rd mate that the LNG Leo was on the horizon (I just knew that Rob was there getting closer to me...) he was holding out the radio telephone to me saying that my brother wanted to talk to me from the LNG Leo. We spoke on the radio telephone like it was nothing and blinked our flashlights at each other as our ships passed in the night, not realizing that the officers on both ships were scratching their heads... In the fleet there was talk that we had ESP but, we felt each other like we were of one soul and his passing at the ripe old age of 27 tore me apart in ways I’m still coming to understand at 60.
So, 59 countries and as many years later has me living in Houston Texas with my Ameripean family of six plus our Jack Russell that thinks she's a lab and our 7 month old 80 lb Lab puppy. Happy, healthy and well loved with most of my hair still in the right place!
