Kevin's Story

After graduation and some time in the U.S. Navy, I returned to L.A. and began college at Fullerton College while working nights at Disneyland, waiting tables at the Blue Bayou. While at Fullerton, I attended a year abroad studying in Paris, setting off a life-long love for France. In 1989, I transferred up to Cal (U.C. Berkeley) where I continued my studies in French History, with the idea of becoming a professor. I also continued to support myself by waiting tables night and day, mostly at upscale steakhouses. In 1992, my sister, Monette, was diagnosed with terminal cancer and given just a few weeks to live. She died in November of that year. In many ways, her death changed everything for our small family; we never have really recovered. We miss her every day. I graduated from Cal in 1993, and with the aid of two professors came very close to attending grad school at either Chicago or Princeton. I decided against it given the additional time and money it would take to get the PhD, given that the two-years-to-graduation upon transfer ended up taking four due to the extremely high cost of living in the Bay Area. Instead, I returned home in more ways than one, taking a job in the Production Management office in Disneyland's Entertainment Division. It was fantastic to return to Disneyland, this time in a suit-and-tie role keeping track of expenses and progress on hundreds of Disney live entertainment events from Main Street to far-off Hong Kong. While at Disney, I was introduced to Melissa, the woman who would shortly thereafter become my wife. In 1998, we began planning to start a family and decided, on financial and social atmosphere grounds, to relocate to Melissa's native Oregon. We moved to Portland late that year. With an eye towards supporting a young family, I entered law school at Willamette University College of Law in Salem, Oregon, commuting down from Portland daily for classes while Melissa worked as a social worker for the county. Our first child,...Expand for more
Simon, was born in September of that year. In 2001, I graduated from law school and accepted an associate position with the Portland office of Preston Gates & Ellis. I started just a few days prior to the 9/11 attacks as the junior member of their litigation team. On 9/11, Melissa and baby Simon were in the air, flying home from Los Angeles after taking our baby boy on a tour to meet family. After they were safely back in LAX, my parents met them at the airport and drove them straight up the 5 all the way back to Portland, an event no one will ever forget. Assuming we were going to war, I immediately volunteered for the JAG corps with the Oregon National Guard, and was granted an immediate commission almost overnight. However, less than 48 hours later, that offer was rescinded as hundreds of Oregon attorneys, much younger than I, had also volunteered. In 2002, our second child, Ian, was born. He was born smiling and laughing and hasn't stopped yet! In 2003, baby girl Hadley came, to complete our little family. Determined to do something in service to our country, I then applied to enter the Department of State as a Foreign Service Officer, i.e. an American Diplomat. Some two years later, State offered me that position and we re-located to Washington, D.C. in 2003. Since that time I have served overseas in our embassies and consulates for two or three year tours at: -- U.S. Embassy Bogota, Colombia -- U.S. Mission to International Organizations (UN) in Vienna, Austria -- U.S. Embassy Islamabad, Pakistan -- U.S. Embassy Lima, Peru -- U.S. Consulate General Tijuana, Mexico -- U.S. Permanent Mission to the United Nations, New York In 2014, my wife Melissa and I split up, with me retaining custody of the boys, while Hadley went with her to her new home on the East Coast. This event was devastating to me, only second to Monette's death, and has caused a good deal of pain and anguish since. However, I think now, 2018, I'm finally starting to feel like myself again.
