Kim (Borland)'s Story

Where to begin.... My family moved to Oklahoma City during my eight-grade year at Sharples. My step dad was one of many who suffered the Boeing layoff. He could not find work in Seattle so he drove to Oklahoma, where he was born, and returned a couple of weeks later with news he had a job waiting for him at Tinker AFB. And, that was that! My first day of school, at NW Classen in Oklahoma City, a very pretty, "bouncy", long-haired, red head sat down beside me and asked; “are you all a new people?" I swear to God, I did not understand a word she said! I just knew there were cowboys and horses everywhere. And, while there are... it's not like I imagined. Needless to say, I survived. We moved to Del City, OK where I met my first husband, and the only good that came out of that union is my three sons, which lead to three beautiful daughters-in-law, and "nine" precious grandchildren. My oldest who is 40 has two boys 16 & 13, and two girls 10 and eight, my second born is 39 and has three sons who are 13, 10 and eight months, and my baby (mom's, tell me you know what I mean ;) who is 34 with one four-year old girl, and one two-year old boy. And, I watch them all as much as I can! I ended up getting into insurance 32 years ago as a stenographer (who remembers what this is?), and worked my way up to claims handling that included; homeowners, liability, casualty, general liability, auto, theft, fraud and work ...Expand for more
comp, for the last 25 of those years. I am now retired and married to a retired Navy Chief who works for DEVON Energy here in the heart of Oklahoma City. I have a female Rhodesian Ridgeback, Ellie, which is one of the best dogs ever and, of course, absolutely beautiful. My youngest sister lives in Reston, VA with her family, my older sister lives in Federal Way, WA close to her son and his family, and our oldest sister lives here in Newalla, OK with family scattered all over, like me. ;) My three wonderful brothers who always protected me, helped me deal with so much and taught me even more, my dad who I wish I could have seen more often, and step dad, have all passed on. My sweet mother, the one person I could count on with my life, the most precious being who was always there for me, my kids, my grandkids, and knew me like a book, passed away this past July. And, I have to say, it IS the most gut wrenching, heartbreaking, hardest thing to deal with ~ EVER! I have been back to Seattle several times but have only been fortunate enough to see a few of my old friends, some of whom I will NEVER forget and think of often. My only hope is they never forget me. While walking through a mall or store, I see people wearing t-shirts with "Seattle Space Needle" written on them or pictures of "Mt Rainer" and it brings back so many happy memories. And, though I will always miss Seattle, Oklahoma is now my home!
