Kim's Story
The day after graduation I moved to Davis, but after a few years of college I took a break, moved to downtown SF, then to Berchtesgaden, Germany, where I was pretty much a ski bum for a winter. I moved back to San Jose and finished up at SJSU with a B.S. degree in Recreation and Park Administration and ran an inner-city day camp for urban children for a summer. Met the love of my life while at SJSU and we married only a few months later. In 1985 we moved back to Davis with our four young children. They are all adults now and I'm "Grammy" of eight: four boys and four girls, all close in age, and all living near me. They are so much fun and I love them like crazy..
August of 2010 my strong, healthy husband suddenly collapsed at work and didn't survive - an undetected vascular birth defect in the brain. So many wonderful memories: long barefoot evening walks, thru-hiking the John Muir Trail from Yosemite Valley to the summit of Mt. Whitney; walking across England sea-to-sea, village-to-village; exploring Israel and Europe; driving a 10k-mile USA circui...Expand for more
t in our VW bus with all four kids - twice. We backpacked the Lost Coast Trail just a week before he collapsed.
Our youngest daughter is the only one of our four kids not nearby; she and her husband met while living and working in Antarctica, and they have a log chalet-home in "a ghost town" high in the Colorado Rockies. She was a "Professional Adventurer" - always doing or planning something epic. After eight years "on the ice," she is now working in the space industry as an engineer designing space suits. She ran her multi-team Senior Project converting that original 1979 VW bus to fully electric. It's the car she came home from the hospital in on the day she was born.
I'm busy with volunteer work at my church and in the community, photo-journaling the nearby National Cemetery, reading, writing, doing international travel for hiking and War History, backpacking and day-hiking the Pacific Crest Trail and the Sierra, but mostly spending time with my eight Grands.
I often wonder about my old friends and classmates. "What ever happened to..." you?
