Kim's Story

My biggest surprise I hate to admit is succeeding. With the crappy childhood of living as a foster child in a crazy house I never thought about succeeding in life but partying and having fun escaping. I still think fondly of those crazy nights out, even though they mostly ended up with me puking. (I no longer drink or party now because I want my son to see that life can be good without it-- I'll let you know if it works in a few years). Now I am happily married to Steve. We have been together since 1988. I feel really blessed to love my best friend. We have one son together, Kevin who is 12. I also had two step son's, one passed away three years ago. It is still very difficult to think about. My other step son graduated from Manhattan College and is struggling to get a job like everyone else, but managing to live on his own... with just a few calls home for cash donations. I have been working for a Union since 1989 representing support staff employees (food service, secretaries, nurses, custodians)in school districts here on long island. I guess not too surprising since I used to stand up to the bullies for other people. I mostly like my job very much but it can be very stressful and demanding. I was named Regional Director in 1995. een elected vice president and re-elected for terms of three years each. I guess that is a surpise too. I never thought of myself as a leader, but I guess the childhood baggage was to blame for not seeing myself as others did. I think I got involved in protecting workers because I remember how afraid I was to ask for help but so desparately needed help. I can see the hurt inside that a person hides and can relate. People feel comfortable telling me their problems and I have always been good at convincing authority figures to have a heart. What I miss most since High School are my friends. I never kept in touch with any of them except Jane who was my best friend for many years and is dear to my heart even after all these years (even though I think of her often but call and email hardly ever). She was a bright spot in a very dark childhood and I will be forever grateful for that. Thanks also to all my friends, little did you know the relief you provided to me from the craziness at home. Well today is much different. I have a wonderful son who I tell every day that I love him and that I feel blessed to be his mom. And I laugh with and love my husband even when we have a disagreement. I have been doubly blessed for sure with the men in my life.
