Kim's Story
Life
I have been an archaeologist at the prehispanic site of Teotihuacan (about an hour outside of Mexico City) for 26 years now. I am the clay figurine expert for the site, but besides working here I have also worked at sites deep in the jungles of the Maya area as well as in the north of Mexico. While I was studying in California, I additionally worked in several areas there. I speak 4 languages: English, Spanish, Nahuatl (the language of the "Aztes") and Yucatec Maya - - the first two fluently, and the last two hardly at all anymore because there is noone around here to practice with.
Apart from my "regular" job, I also give most of the official tours for world diplomats (Presidents, Prime Ministers, religious leaders, etc.) on behalf of the Mexican government and some of the Embassies. I also am often involved, either on camara or off (and often both) with making documentaries for t.v. about the site. I was recently featured in about a 3 minute spot on "Digging for the Truth" on the History Channel, "Is It Real" on the National Geographic Channel, and "The History of God" on Britain's BB3 Channel. I am also in the documentary "Journey of Faith: The New World" filmed by FARMS (available through BYU).
My husband is the Director of the Teotihuacan Archaeological Zone and he is a native of the area, so our original house is right on top of ruins on land that has been in his family for 400 years that we're aware of. We have 2 great children, about 20 cats and 3 dogs.
I had some health issues there for a while, so I try not to wear myself out by working all day in the sun anymore. I spent so much time dedicating myself to my career, getting...Expand for more
my Ph.D., raising a family, etc. that I figure now it's time to relax a bit during whatever limited time is left over after all my diplomatic and work-related duties are done at the end of the day! I love staying in touch with my friends via the internet, even if it's only just to check in and say hi. I enjoy gardening, bird and insect watching (what a nerd, eh?), etc. I also like to watch t.v. and am not ashamed to admit it! My favorites are Law and Order and the CSI's, and I love movies both old and new. Still love cartoons and comic books, but haven't seemed to have time for either in quite a while.
Now that I've accomplished most of what I ever set out to do, I'm finding renewed joy in lots other aspects of life. I've been out of Paramount/Hollydale a long time, but I still cherish those times and memories. Above all else, I cherish my friends. I have several good friends from as far back as the 5th grade all the way up through high school who have kept in touch with me for many years, and I love them all. And I have fond memories of those of you that I still haven't heard from, so if you get the chance, please write!
I truly believe that the "early years" were rough on all of us, and we all struggled with one thing or another as far as school, family, friends, etc. went. I look back now and realize that I was probably not the easiest person to be around at all times, and if I ever offended anyone at any time, I can tell you right now that it wasn't intentional and I hope you will forgive me.
Not positive I will renew my Classmates membership, but please remember that I hold you all in my heart and prayers and hope to hear from you!
