Kim's Story
Life
We moved to Dayton, OH in June, 2008. I am currently teaching 3rd grade in a charter school here in Dayton. It's a very demanding job--one I'm not exactly thrilled with, but it pays the bills. We know we will be in this area for at least 2 years.
I have 3 children--my oldest (son) graduated from the Air Force Academy in 2005, and just got married this past September. He is now living in Aviano, Italy with his wife, Monique, a dog (Rocco), and a cat. He is still a Security Forces Officer, and he will be deploying to Iraq, Afghanistan, etc at some point during his time in Italy. I'm not thrilled with that part, but I know it's part of his job. My other 2 children are both girls--one is a freshman at Richland Community College in Decatur. She's living with my parents as a means of getting away from home yet still having a safety net before being totally on her own. The other is a junior in high school, and totally upset with us for moving her the summer before her junior year. Both are hoping to get back to Georgia to finish school sometime this summer.
We have technically 4 pets--one cat (25 lbs), some fish, a rabbit, and a dog. The dog was found literally in the middle of a road, so we adopted him. He's quite smart and a very good dog...Expand for more
. The vet thinks he's a lab/pit bull mix. I don't know--he's scared of everything that moves!! I tell him he's a disgrace to his breed!
Military
I was never in the military, but my husband has been in the Air Force for 24 years. He is not retiring yet, but that time is looming on the horizon.
We have lived in Arizona (just outside of Pheonix); Dover, DE; Lajes, Azores (small island of Terceira off the coast of Portugal); Mountain Home, Idaho; Valdosta, GA; and are currently stationed at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, OH. We know we will be here at least until 2010 because it is a 2
-year tour. I anticipate going back overseas from here as this is our 3rd stateside assignment in a row...
It has been an interesting lifestyle. It's tough, sometimes, being away from family, but my children have learned to adapt to many new and exciting (and BORING) places. They have learned to make friends easily everywhere we go, and they now have friends literally all over the world. It is nice being only 4 1/2-5 hours from home for the first time in 20 years (yes, my hubby and I celebrated our 20th anniversary last March). We have made the trip west on I-70 many times in the 6 months we have lived here! It's really great to be a part of my family again!!
