Batya's Story
Life
Part III (written in 2006) : It's November 2006 and we are still in Jerusalem. We had a, much hoped for, second miracle child this year (6 + years after the first). My husband is still learning in Yeshiva and will be a rabbi in 15 months (G-d willing). Our lives here are simple and sweet. We really feel like we have been so blessed and guided. I am happy beyond my wildest dreams.
Part II (written in 2004) : Our journey has led us to the holy land. My husband, son and I are living in Israel. We moved here on July 4th, 2004 after nearly seven years in Pennsylvania. I missed California SOOO much but didn't feel that I had made a real place for myself there. In Philly, there was a real feeling of community. We made such close friendships and were blessed with so many valuable growth experiences. Here in Israel though, I feel that I have found the whole package. The land is alive with Torah (the bible) and my new friends here already seem like childhood friends.
We live in a beautiful villa in Jerusalem where the vibe is more hippy Jewish than mainstream and we are thriving and happy. We shop in the open-air-market across the street. We take walks into the Old City and pray at the Western Wall. We have so much right here in our little country. We have the Dead Sea and Ein Gedi where David hid from Shaul in one of the dark caves looking out over the dessert. With a view of the Dead Sea and close to the oasis of Ein Gedi there stands Masada. Masada was Herod's royal citadel and later the outpost of the Zealots during the Jewish Revolt that ended in mass suicide rather than submit to Roman capture. To the North, Israel has the hills of Tzfat where in the 16th century, many famous religious scholars and mystics moved to flee the horrors of the Spanish Inquisition. To the West Israel's Mediterranean coast line with all it's beauty. These are the lands of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Sarah, Laya, Rachel and Rebecca. I am living in the lands that Moses brought the...Expand for more
Hebrew slaves to, but was never allowed to enter. This is that land where the Chanukah story happened and where David fought Goliath.
I am so thankful for this life that I have been given. My school years were hard and unstable but I feel lucky to have lived each day of it. Each person taught me something and I grew because of them. I want to apologize to anyone whom I may have hurt or disappointed. I remember relationships with good people that I let slip away and I remember foolish decisions that pushed good people away from me. There isn't one person that I harbor ill will towards. I hope the people that I have known in my lifetime can say the same of me.
PART I (written in 2003): I broke my neck in 1989. After having worked retail from 16 to 21, almost loosing my life left me feeling like I should be doing more with it. So, after recovering, I went to Cal State Chico and received a degree in Speech, Language Pathology and Audiology in 1995. On the day that I graduated, I married Marc, my college sweetheart and love of my life. A month later, we moved to Japan. I accepted a job offered through the Japanese Consulate in San Francisco working for the Japanese government. We taught English for two years and traveled around South East Asia. We did a three-month trip from Japan to Thailand (mainly the islands) to Singapore to Jakarta, Indonesia and then Bali. When we returned to America, we moved to the East Coast.
Now, Marc and I have a son named Shayle and we live in a religious community. Marc is a stay-at-home-web designer and I am a stay-at-home-mom and the SpeedDating Coordinator for Philadelphia (I do it at night, whenever I find a spare minute and during Shayle's nap time).
I am thrilled that my life has turned out this well!! Thank G-d!!! Too bad it took breaking my neck to get me here. I'd bet that no one has ever been so grateful to have been sent through a windshield before!!! We are now talking about moving to Israel. We'll visit next year.
