Kimberly's Story

Life After graduating high school, I tried the College thing, but let's just say that didn't work out too well. So, I began working full time as a waitress until I was 20 years old. I decided that wasn't for me either, so I moved to Garden Grove, Ca. and began working for a large promotional products company at entry level. Then for the next six years I worked hard and learned all I could to better my career, slowing only briefly in 1999 to have my beautiful baby girl, Brianna. Then, tragically on May 6th, 2002 my father was diagnosed with a life-threatening brain tumor, and on the same day I was stricken with Hyperthyroidism. My Father passed away six weeks later, June 17th, 2002 and my health continued to worsen. Despite all efforts, my Doctors and Specialists were unable to control my illness, and I had to have my Thyroid surgically removed on August 31st, 2004. Luckily I came through the surgery with few complications and am slowly regaining my health. I am still on medical disability, unable to work, but I am dealing with that (I love working, I don't do the housewife thing very well). But I do love all the time I get to spend with my Daughter that I wouldn't have if I were working. It's hard to be a single mother, working or otherwise, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. Brianna is now five years old and will be staring Kindergarten in September,...Expand for more
and she is by far the best thing to ever happen to me. I had a lot of complications during my pregnancy and I almost lost her a couple of times, but my little miracle was born at 8:29pm on December 20th, in perfect health, weighing 8lbs, 1oz and she was 20 1/2" long! She has not stopped amazing me since. Every day she says or does something that reminds me how lucky I am. Even through the worst of my illness and the overwhelming feelings of fear and despair I experienced when we weren't sure if I would survive the surgery, but knew I wouldn't survive if I couldn't have it, she always found a way to lift my spirits - I know she's the reason I'm still alive today. She's my strength, my Angel! So, that's it up to now. We'll see in about a year if I will be able to get back to work and re-start the trudge up that corporate ladder we all know and love. Until then, I will take advantage of time i've been given to spend with my daughter and try to remember what it was like to be five years old. She sure seems to love it! And it's a whole lot of fun to watch a child experience new things that we take for granted every day - she really does stop everything to smell the roses - and they say the parents teach the children. I guarantee that Brianna has taught me more about life and living in the past five years than I could ever hope to teach her. Ironic, isn't it?
