Kimberly's Story
Life
For those who either went to elementary or middle school with me this may (or may not) come as a surprise: I received a heart/double lung transplant on June 14, 1996. Since then I've been doing amazingly well--I even participated in the 2004 U.S. Transplant Games in Minneapolis, MN. I had a wonderful time and (if my health will allow me) I intend to participate at these games each time they come around. They are held every 2 years--see ya in 2006; my 10 year anniversary!
*UPDATE ON TRANSPLANT GAMES* The date and location of the 2006 U.S. Games has been announced! Place: Louisville, Kentucky. Date: June 16-21. The Opening Ceremony starts 2 days AFTER my 10 year anniversary (6/14/96)!! Coincidence? I don't think so! :-)
4/23/05: I recently became involved with the National Kidney Foundation. I do volunteer work in regards to the games. I am part of the Team Florida committee and (more specifically) in the Apparel Committee--we get to come up with a brand new, totally great Team Florida uniform layout for the 2006 games!
Summer, 2006: I can't believe it's been 10 years since I received my transplant. Where does the time go? Anyway, I recently came back from Louisville and (drum roll please) I won a bronze medal in the 1500m racewalk--GO ME! Of course, I won't be doing THAT event ever again-haha. It has already been announced where and when the 2008 Games will be taking place. Where? Pittsburgh, PA. When? July 11-16.
***ANOTHER TRANSPLANT GAMES UPDATE***
Almost two months have gone by since this year's games and I had a blast. Contrary to a previous entry, I DID do the 1500m race walk again. And came home with a silver medal. Not only that, I beat my previous record by 4 minutes and 11 seconds. The 2010 games will be held in Madison, Wisconsin July 30-...Expand for more

Workplace
in April, 2000 I was hired as a part-time employee at Publix Supermarkets (the one in Tampa Palms) and stayed for over 4 years.
I first started out as a cashier--that lasted a couple of weeks (LOL). I then worked as a bagger until my doctors intervened and said that while they were happy that I was working but they didn't want me to be acting SO normal (picking up carts outside in the parking lot, bagging heavy items, etc.). So after that I started leveling the store-aka: I walked up and down the aisles to make sure the items were nice and even for the customers. Not only that, but my hours were now slashed by more than half (per doctor's orders). :-(
After I graduated HCC I started looking for full-time employment; I knew that Publix wouldn't cut it for me. Around the time of graduation I became certififed to be a Secretary 1 in the Hillsborough County school system. I went on countless interviews from May, 2003 - May, 2004 and got nothing not even a nibble. Finally, I got an interview in the last place I expected--the state government!
In early July, 2004 I interviewed with someone who worked for the Department of Financial Services. Around this time I was all set for my trip to Minnesota (see Life Bio). I suddenly realized that I might have to cancel my trip if I got the job and would have to start my new job ASAP. Luckily, everything worked out. I got the job AND I was able to go on my trip. I started August 23, 2004, and I haven't looked back. :-)
In July, 2007, the Tampa Field Office of the Department of Financial Services was closed. In December I moved to Tallahassee and switched Bureaus. From the Bureau of Auditing to the Bureau of Accounting. I get along with my co-workers and I enjoy learning a new area of my department.
