Kimberly's Story

After high school, I went to the Univ. of Tulsa as an engineering physics major. But I decided that meteorology would be more fun and so transferred to to OU and changed my major to Meteorology. I earned my B.S. in 1978 and my M.S. in fall 1982. I got a job at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and arrive don November 4th, 1982. I worked on microbursts and later focused research on aviation weather topics. I worked mostly with radar and did some statistics. I met my wife, Pam Wilson (when we got married I kept my name) in 1984 in a pig pen, complete with piglets. The pigs liked me, her horses liked me, even her cat liked me, and so I passed the primary compatibility tests. We bought our first house in Longmont, CO, in March 1986 and we were married August 9, 1986. We took our honeymoon on motorcycles, camping all over southern Colorado. In 1990, Pam was admitted to medical school and in 1991 I bought a 1946 Cessna 140, so I could fly from Longmont, CO, to Kirksville, MO, to see her. She learned to fly in that airplane. In 1995, I left NCAR to work at the National Severe Storms Laboratory ...Expand for more
in Norman, CO, so that we could be together again (she got a residency slot in OU). I was encouraged to pursue my Ph.D. in meteorology starting in 1997 and our daughter, Theresa, was born on Dec 2, 1998. I finished my Ph.D. in 2000 and our son, Alexander, was Born July 29, 2000. We completed a custom log home on 10 acres east of Norman in 2006 but only one year later, in less than a month, both my parents died: my Mom June 29, 2007 and my Dad on July 21, 2007. I've been at NSSL ever since, working on various projects dealing with everything from statistical analysis of microburst detecting radar, to using ensemble cloud models to forecast severe storms, to classification of winter precipitation type using dual polarization radar, to working on one of the mobile radars in VORTEX2 in 2009 and 2010. While getting my M.S., I started running and bicycling, mainly to support my eating habit. I still run and bicycle. I still fly (over 1000 h now), play the violin (even got paid for it a few times), and enjoy ham radio. I sold the motorcycle to buy the airplane and hope to get a four place airplane in the future.
