Kip's Story
Life
Went to joint enrollment at DeKalb senior year. Lasted a whole 2 and 1/2 quarters at Georgia Tech after graduation (architecture).
Joined the Navy and served as a cryptologic technician (boot camp in Orlando, "A" school in Pensacola and spy duty in Adak, Alaska). While in service, married and subsequently divorced.
After service and a few months getting reacquainted with civilian life, I went to work for my Dad's employee benefit administrative company. Attended Georgia State (actuarial science) and Control Data Institue (computer programming) while working there. Worked there for 15 years until Dad's death and employee's felonious actions caused demise of company.
Since then, I've been through a couple of interim careers (cook and cement mixer driver).
Until 10/2004 I was an over the road (and over and over and over it again) tractor trailer driver.
Married "the girl down the street" (Kris Robins) in April of 1977. We have two boys (Jason and Jeremy) and five grandsons (Justin, Brennan, Aidan, Zachary and AJ).
Was diagnosed with MS a few years back and am fortunate enough to still be able to work at driving (which I love/hate!).
Regret not having kept up with everyone from school and hope someday (if I ever stop running around in circles all over the country) to get reacquainted. Maybe at the next reunion?
Basically, just your average, run of the mill life. Don't know exactly where it's all headed, but I'm finding out one day at a time (and I wouldn't have it any other way!).
As of 10/2004, am now retired and trying to get adjusted to not having to be half way across the country by tomorrow morning. In fact, trying to adjust to not having to be ANYWHERE tomorrow morning!
Was diagnosed with small B cell Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2005. Turned out that what I thought had caused my inability to work (progression of my MS) was actually my body being strained by the Lymphoma. Had 6 months of heavy chemo followed by 2 years of maintenance and am in a "wait and see" mode on the effectiveness/longevity of the treatment since t...Expand for more
his form is not curable (yet), but it can stay in remission for extended periods of time.
Now I'm trying to get back in some semblance of "shape" after all the time of inactivity.
Over a year since end of maintenance chemo and all seems to be going well on the cancer front. The MS has progressed a bit, though, and now I spend more time than I'd like in the wheelchair. On a good note, our oldest son, Jason, got remarried in 11/2007 and he and Nicole gave us our fourth grandchild in February, 2009.
Currently enjoying the little one and the fact that Justin (Jason's boy from his first marriage) has moved in with all of us.
Update : November, 2009. After 32 and a half years Kris and I have divorced.
Update : August, 2012 MS has progressed further and now I spend most of my time in the wheelchair. There are some signs that my Lymphoma may be returning, but nothing definitive yet.
Update - May, 2013 Lymphoma returned in December and am currently undergoing chemo again. The new drug they are using is working very well, but my body isn't tolerating it very well, so we'll have to see where this all ends up.
Update - April, 2016 Lymphoma returned again last year about this time. Currently on a new drug which has it under control without too many side effects.
Update - May, 2018 Still hanging in with the same Cancer treatment though it's starting to affect my immune system more and more with time. MS has progressed considerably, too.
Update : January, 2021 Not much changed in the last few years (other than that whole 2020 thing). Still kicking (when the legs work) and hanging in there.
