Kirk's Story

College Undergrad overseas at Univ of Maryland, European Division (was in Navy, in Spain, for most of it)...finished by using non-traditional credit from military training...did grad work at Chapman University, in Monterey, CA, Monterey Institute of Intl Studies (M.A. Teacher of Foreign Langs), and now at Regis University in Denver, working on M.Ed. Workplace After I retired from a 20-yr Navy career (see Military bio), I embarked on my second career as a teacher/trainer...it is a gift I discovered in the Navy, and I enjoy it, and believed I could make a career out of it...and I have thusfar...worked for a wonderful company when I first came to Colorado for 3.5 yrs, till they were bought out and laid off a bunch of folks, me included...I was a multimedia training specialist/consultant with them, and a better company I couldn't have asked for...great people, great work...felt more like family...couldn't believe I got paid to do what I did... After the layoff, was consulting for about 10 months before finding a position as a senior training specialist in the local hospital, teaching classroom patient registration and medical insurances to new clerks and registrars...a job I absolutely loved, outside of the pay...but then, the work helping to improve clinic operations more than compensated for that...left there after 3.5 years, then consulted for a bit before my next full-time job, with RWD...lots of travel, so when I had the chance to join my old boss at Regis Learning, I jumped on it...did course development for graduate and undergraduate college for Regis University, before they bought a local talent company, and stopped contract work...finally, have been working full-time now for 2 years for a large electronics manufacturing company, performng supply-chain management training (received experience with this at two previous companies)... Military After leaving BAHS, attended the Air Force Academy briefly...ask me about the reasons sometime...then bummed around Montana before joining the World's Finest Nuclear Navy, as a language and intelligence specialist...I was sent to Monterey, Ca to the military's foreign language training school (twice) where I learned Bulgarian and Russian, and where, as a Chief Petty Officer later in my career, I served on the staff... I served ...Expand for more
two tours of duty in Spain, where I both flew P-3 maritime patrol aircraft, earning my Naval Aircrew wings, and on surface ships, everything from destroyers to cruisers to aircraft carriers...floated around the Mediterranean, and was involved in both the Lebanon and Libya crises...saw some great places on port calls around the Med...Haifa, Israel, Alexandria and Cairo, Egypt, Naples, Sicily, the French Riviera, Yugoslavia, Crete, Turkey, the Red Sea, Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territories... Was also stationed for a year isolated duty on the Black Sea coast of Turkey, 185 miles south of the Crimean Peninsula, where we saw some pretty interesting stuff, including a hijacking of a Soviet Aeroflot aircraft right into our station...and the Turkish rugs...WOW...loved Turkey...great food, good people... Stationed in Scotland for three years, which we loved...and guess what...the natives spoke English there...well, kinda...grin...also good food (not great but good), and English breakfasts are the best...traveled all over, drank whiskey and warm beer, and brought back lots of wonderful memories... Final assignment before retiring was as a Division Chief for a little outfit that did it all, flew, rode "skimmers" (surface ships) and was assigned as the underway division chief on four Los Angeles class submarines, sailing in harm's way in the North Atlantic, very close to Russian territory...loved duty on the subs...it was definitely a man's world there...got my "blue nose" for sailing above the Arctic Circle...the only way to go to sea, in my opinion...grin... Retired at a very nice ceremony at the U.S. Naval Memorial in downtown Washington D.C. after a distinguished 20-year career as a Chief Cryptologic Technician, Interpretive (E-7)....and wouldn't have changed a thing about it... Personal Married the love of my life, Judi, in 1979, in Spain. Three grown daughters, one in the Navy stationed on an aircraft carrier homeported in Japan, three adorable grandkiddies, a girl and two boys. Am living in Denver, CO area, in the mountains. Enjoy reading (still), swimming, shopping, scuba diving (I know, I know...hard to dive in the mountains, but we have lakes and reservoirs)...living a charmed and blessed life now (well, I've always been blessed...I just never knew how much).
