Kristen's Story
Life
I was a major geek at Tolman, but really changed my life after graduation. After one disasterous, party-filled year at URI, I was asked to take a year off and "rethink my goals", as pre-med students were not expected to get a 1.3 GPA! I decided that I needed to get out of RI and see a bit of the world. I was fortunate to get a job as a stewardess on board the Mississippi Queen cruise ship, and steamboated all over the USA. I transferred to American Hawaii Cruises and worked on board the SS Constitution for a year, and decided to try college again at University of Hawaii. This time I succeeded, and finished a degree in pre-med/microbiology, working on the ship in the summers. My GPA was good enough to help me earn a full tuition scholarship to The George Washington University School of Medicine Physician Assistant Program, in Washington, DC. The summer before I started GWU, in 1990, I spent 4 months in Sydney, Australia, where I worked at the Hard Rock Cafe. In Sydney, I met Steve, who was also doing a working holiday from England. We fell in love, dated long distance for 2 years while I was in DC, and I spent 1991-92 as an exchange student in Hertfordshire, England, with Steve and his family. After graduating in 1993, we got married and moved to Lafayette, LA, where I had been offered a great PA job in pediatrics. I also went back to night school part time and earned a masters degree in health administration from University of St Francis in Chicago (in a distance learning program). I remained there for 7 years, and eventually realized that neither Louisiana or married life were for me. Sadly, we divorced, but we have remained friends. With a new sense of freedom, I spent Y2K trav...Expand for more
elling throughout the USA visiting old friends, soul searching, and job hunting. After a 3 month stay in RI (and realizing that it still was not meant for me to be there), I found a job in Nashville, TN, where several friends of mone lived. I have been here for 5 years now, and really love it here. I have a group of the world's coolest, and very diverse, friends; and a fantastic job in family practice medicine. I'm still single and dating, have no children- just 2 cocker spaniels, Higgins and Baxter, and a kitty named Gumbo. My job pays well and the cost of living here is very low compared to RI- and no state income taxes! I still visit my family in Pawtucket 2 or 3 times a year, and I miss them all every day. I've come a long way since Tolman, and I wish I'd had the opportunity to be more outgoing and popular in my teens. I had a disorder called trichotillommania as a teenager; I compulsively pulled out my hair starting around the time my parents divorced, and it was devastatingly embarassing for me to have to wear a wig to school everyday. I remained quiet most of the time to keep myself invisible, as I was so self-conscious about my appearance. Coupled with being a bit overweight and having bad acne, I was chronically ashamed of myself. I only seemed to excel at certain classes, and on the diving board (wearing a bathing cap to conceal the baldness). All of these habits and inhibitions are behind me now, thank God ,and I am a totally different person today. Perhaps one day I will see some of you at a reunion. I hope all my old friends are doing well, and I wish everyone the best! If you remember me, feel free to email me- essspecially if you are ever heading to Tennessee!! KC :)
