Jewelynn's Story
Let`s see ...
High School memories are filled with waking early, catching the "mini bus"(m.b.)from Nanakuli to Waianae and back. My really good friend was Jeri-Lynn Santos. Guess where we created and sealed our bond of friendship...on the m.b. Rarely did I stay after school or participated in any clubs. I think once Jeri and I came to help with building a float. At times I wish that I participated in a club or two but father time makes no haste and you just need to move on because as we know time waits for no one.
College went by swiftly. Started in southern California, lived in San Pedro while attending Marymont Palos Verdes College (79-81 A.A.). Then off to northern California, lived in Arcata while attending Humboldt State University (BS in Fisheries Biology) and College of the Redwoods (Aqua Culture)(81-86). During this time I began working with the Calif. Dept. of Fish and Game as a Fish and Wildlife Seasonal Aide and by the time I left in 1994 and returned to Hawaii I was an Assoc. Marine Biologist.
Family was something that also came with time. Came home for two weeks and got married in 1988 at Moanalua Gardens. This was also the 1st time my parents me...Expand for more
t my husband to be (Kerry). That was stressful. We had our daughter, Oaokaena K.C. Kirkland in 1990. We were living in a cabin at the time outside of Ferndale,CA. No electricity, a generator to charge our batteries and a propane stove and refridgerator. If you are able to live in the "boonies" with someone you will get to know them and either love them or hate them. We are still together today ...
Today, I Love ko Hawai`i pae aina. This includes olelo Hawai`i, hula, mele, `ohana, na hoa, ka mea, ka mea, ka mea. I Love watching TV, my students, learning, teaching, meeting new people, and sharing who we are as a people.
My daughter is entering her second year of college at LCC, works part time at Ko Olina Beach Club and Makakilo Elementary School. Helps in paying some of the household bills. She is truly a treasure. My husband has been a part of the down trodded economy participating in the states unemployment. And I am teaching 8th grade science at NHIS.
There you have it a summary of my adult life in five paragraphs. That is what paraphrasing looks like. Well hope all is well with all of you and that life has treated you well.
