Kristina's Story
It all started with teacher Mary Walker writing in my yearbook that I was "a lady and a scholar"....not one of the cool kids in 1964, but I always was a people pleaser. After graduation, we moved to the Military Academy at West Point where my father taught. Knowing what he did about his own misspent youth and the cadets, he immediately shipped me off to Mary Washington College, which had more rules than a convent! I wanted to work for the UN after graduation, but my father's death in 1965 and final request that I become a teacher put me on a career path for 41 years that I ADORED!!!!!!!! I was really good at it, and loved every day!!! Part of the reason, I suppose, was that I had a love-hate relationship with my principals, who seemed to think I should request permission ...Expand for more
before I staged Shakespeare (complete with costumes and fencing) in the halls or poetry workshops with folk music, black lights, and food! Along the way, I received a Master of Education from PSU, began a speaking career with the NCTE, wrote educational pieces, and mentored student teachers who hopefully are now creating chaos in their own schools. I retired two years ago, as my husband of 40 years is gravely ill with cancer. On a positive note, he is doing very well...better than ever expected...and we relocated near our children and grandchildren in Ashburn, Virginia, where I am informed by the kids that my job is to give "love, hugs, and candy." Not a bad career path. It took me many years to appreciate every single moment in life, to love each day, and to be thankful.
