More about Kristy:"I have a lot to be thankful for- a wonderful husband who has put up with my quirks and issues for 20 years, and 2 great, healthy kids- a girl Scottie; and a boy Grayson.
I had a 12 year career in sales and intended to keep climbing the corporate ladder after I had kids. We rationalized that our kids would have more one on one attention and be better adjusted since I worked out of the house and they would stay at home with a nanny. Even weekly overnight travel would be no problem, because we would have such well-adjusted kids. We worked hard and enjoyed the rewards. We were behind the wheel of our own universe.
Things played out as we planned. We decided to have a child in 1996, boom- we got pregnant with a girl. We wanted 2 kids, "one of each", about 2 years apart, and boom- our son was born 22 months later. We had a great marriage, great jobs, everything was under control. Until June 1, 1999, I believed I could achieve anything if I worked hard enough. My maxim was, "If it is to be, it is ...Expand for more
up to me".
On that day, I flew away from my family on a seemingly routine business trip. And the end of that trip found me broken and paralyzed under a pile of debris in a burning plane. The pilot had attempted to land in a raging thunderstorm, careened off the runway and smashed into a light fixture.
As I came back into consciousness, I heard people shouting the plane was going to explode. OK, get up, I told my body. And for the first time in my life, I was unable to do for myself. I literally could not move.
A picture popped into my head; a 3 year old towheaded girl and an 18 month old boy with red hair standing alone. My kids with no mother! The urgency of saving my kids’ mom made me start screaming as loudly as I could, "Help me, I have children!" Maybe someone would help, not because I was special, but because I was a mom. I heard a voice in the darkness. "I’m going to get you out of here. I won’t leave you.". It was Sidney Baxter, a total stranger. He stayed, despite the danger, and carried me out. And though my neck was broken at C-3, I regained total function of my body.
I’d like to say my life changed right then, but it took a couple more years of being self centered. I was angry over losing my job due to issues from the head injury- problems with multi-tasking, memory, etc. It was very humbling. But I finally turned a corner. I realized my family needed me at home much more than the workplace needed me. I learned I'm not the driver of my life, nor the center of it, God is. There's more to the story, but not enough room on FB.
(added Jan 2010) I shouldn't be here. Last April, I fell 60 feet off a cliff in Germany. Broke my neck, (AGAIN!) skull fracture, other misc...I'm OK, Again. Now I'll really have to write a book! Thanks be to God!".
