Kurt's Story
Update 2015
Retired from active duty for three years, and now working at CVS/CareMark as a customer care rep for incoming calls. I help people wade through the muddle of their Medicare Part D insurance issues (it won't be long for us, folks!) and try to resolve their problems. I am in beautiful Nashville, TN--Music City USA--and have found a lovely church home, Brook Hollow Baptist Church, where I am a backup Sunday School teacher, choir member--I sing baritone now, deacon, and Bible Study/Sunday School director. My Sunday School teacher is Jimmy Gilmer, formerly of Jimmy and the Fireballs (think of the top Billboard hit of 1963, "Sugar Shack"; he was the lead singer). Only in Nashville!
Update 2012
Now 29 years in the Navy and retiring (transferring to the Fleet Reserve) at the end of this June from Naval Mine and Anti-Submarine Warfare Command in San Diego. Have been the principal Senior Enlisted advisor in all things Mine Warfare (MIW) to my boss , who advises all the numbered Fleet Commanders (3rd, 5th, 7th, and Fleet Forces Command) and the Chief of Naval Operations on the state of MIW in the Navy. plan on moving to the Nashville, TN area to pursue another degree, and perhaps teach part time after that. It's been a great ride!
Life
Still in the US Navy--now a Master Chief Mineman (Surface Warfare/Submarines) with 24 years in June 2007. Currently stationed at Mobile Mine Assembly Unit ELEVEN in Goose Creek, SC as Supply Officer. Just came from 2 years as the Senior Enlisted Leader on USS PATRIOT(MCM 7) in Sasebo, Japan. During that time, went to Vladivostok, Russia, Okinawa, Brunei, Singapore, Republic of Korea, and Thailand. Prior to that, spent 1 year in Manama, Bahrain as the Senior Enlisted Leader at Mine Countermeasures Division THREE ONE, which has claimancy over 4 mine countermeasures ships, 1 Explosive Ordnance Disposal Detachment, and 1 Aviation Mine Countermeasures Squadron Detachment (helos). The prior 19 1/2 years have taken me (in no particular order) to Hong Kong, Malaysia, Puerto Rico, through the Panama Canal (twice), San Diego, Canada, the North Pole, Italy, France, across the Equator, Gibraltar, Connecticut, and Washington State--I may have missed some, but you get the picture.
