Brian's Story

Life Just so everyone knows, "Paiz" is my wife's (Kymberly) maiden name. She decided to use my profile instead of creating her own to visit friends from Manzano High School. It’s been a long time since I’ve been back to this site so I decided to update my bio some. Last time I put up a bio I was living in Arizona getting ready to move to Atlanta Georgia with a band to pursue a musical career (June 2001). That band didn’t go anywhere so after three years I left and I joined another band that was signed to an independent label and had a management team. We toured the U.S. and it was a great experience not to mention a total blast but alas… It fell apart in the end. Now nearly five years later I’ve moved back to Arizona (Chandler) and now have a job as a project manager for an Architectural company. The crazy thing is that it’s the same company that I used to work for before I left! I think that I pretty much look the same as the original photos I put up but decided to go ahead and post some that are more recent. At one time I did grow my hair out down to about the middle of my back for a few years while living in Atlanta but it was a total pain so I cut it back to my normal length. I’m still married (11 years this July – 2007) but still no kids. We’re (Kym & I) are thinking about buying a Corvette to help take the place of the financial burden a child would normally be. These days I pretty much just work, go home and hang out with friends. Doug Iverson (class of ’89 if you remember him) and I regularly go to the gym and play racquet ball together. He and his wife now have two girls. I did start another band here locally but it's mostly for fun and to keep me from going crazy. It’s a blues rock type project (in the vein of Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, the Who, etc.) called Sweaty Johnson. I think the name is endlessly hilarious… My wife on the other hand doesn’t. Anyway, you can contact me through my myspace web site if you’re interested: myspace(dot)com/sweatyjohnsonband. Hope to hear from you. School High School isn’t exactly my fondest memory. I was a terrible student and wasn’t very outgoing to say the least. When my family moved to Munds Park, AZ from a small rural Texas town called Aubrey in 1983, there was a definite culture shock for me. My mom was the only one who had ever cut my hair (and not very well either), I wore big dorky glasses that were always slipping down to the end of my nose and I was still wearing bell-bottom corduroy pants. Even though I was only in 6th grade, my peers were quick to point out how out of touch I was. In the summer of 1984 I managed to run over my glasses with my go-cart (It was an accident…really) and convince my parents to let me get contact lenses. Another victory came when while shopping for contacts, my mother finally let me go to a Super Cuts to get a haircut. When 8th grade started I looked a lot different but it was too late. I still wore the label of being a 7th grade dork. The only kids who really accepted me were some high school kids that I knew from the school bus ride into town. Unfortunately this was the stoner crowd. By the time I was a sophomore in high school, things had gotten so bad with my grades during the first semester that my parents put me in a school program called Project New Start. During the rest of the year I had one class in high school – 1st period...Expand for more
Band. After that I went down the street to where the Project New Start building was. In my Junior year I finally started to apply myself. My dad saw I was doing better and it was actually his idea that I drop out of school. The idea was to get out of school, take the GED, find a job and then go to a junior collage. So that’s what I did. I left School in the fall of 1987 with my two lowest grades being C’s. I passed the GED with flying colors but then I hit a brick wall. There weren’t really any jobs in Flagstaff other than working at Safeway, which I totally detested. My family moved from Munds Park to Tahoe City California in the spring of 1988 when my dad was offered the fire chief position there. I was determined to make a fresh start and stay away from the pot and try to be good. I wasn’t in school so the friends I made were guys just like me who didn’t really have any direction in life. The thing is, Tahoe City is nothing more than a resort town. The only industry there is tourism. I worked at the McDonald's for a while and then for a Chinese joint called Potsticker King. A few months later my parents busted me smoking pot and told me to move out. It was a bummer but it was also a sense of freedom to finally strike out on my own. I shacked up with a couple of other guys I knew and was pretty happy. I even got a job at one of the nicer restaurants in town busing tables. Then a friend of mine said that Montana was hiring people off the street with no experience for $18 and hour to help fight the forest fires in Yellowstone National Park. He and a couple of other guys were leaving that afternoon and wanted to know if I wanted in. Not really using my brain, I figured I’d make dear ol’ dad proud if I was a part of something like that. Plus I’d make some real money for a change. Well… to make a long story short, we never got to fight the fire. We did get close enough to see it though. Me and the guys I was with eventually ran out of all our resources and ended up crashing at one of the guys sisters house somewhere in north Idaho. I eventually called dad and said that if he was willing to get me home, I’d be willing to join the Army. Believe me, after the last two weeks of traveling around to five different states trying to get hired to fight forest fires, the Army looked inviting by comparison. Dad was more than happy to fly me home. Mom picked me up at the airport and the first stop we made was the recruiters office. I guess they didn't want to take any chances with me backing out at the last second. That was about September of 1988. My Army start date was in the middle of that coming November College I didn't go to college. I did go to a trade school and eventually meet my future wife while attending though. Does that count? Workplace Well what can I say... I'm a very lucky uneducated guy. I'm working as a project manager for an Architect. I've done lot's of buildings here in the valley. As of this writing, I'm in the middle of working on a Harley-Davidson shop Called "Buddy Stubbs Anthem Harley-Davidson" It's going to be built right off I-17 in Anthem. Everyone who travels in or out of Phoenix via I-17 will see it. How cool is that? I'll write another long story here eventually that will cover my working as well as my touring band experiences. More to come soon... Military Long drawn out story... COMING SOON!!!
