Laima's Story

Feb13,2011 Once again, time is flying by. I continue to fill my time with all the activities I love to do - like bowling. This year, we've also been playing more bridge. Truly a challenging pasttime that keeps my brain working hard. Another newly added item to my schedule comes from my role as grandma - babysitting. My husband, Lee, and I regularly go over on Wed'days and generally take Teddy to the Y for a swim. He just loves the water. I can't wait to see how he does in the lake this summer. Being a grandparent is way better than being a parent! We aren't doing a lot of travelling this year but have managed a couple of short getaways. Ski'd up at Blue Mountain between Xmas and New Years. The conditions were great but my body wasn't as willing as I would have liked. Too many missed sessions at the gym this year resulted in a 1/2 day of skiing for me when my legs would give out. Couldn't get off the blue hills either. More recently, we just got back from Phoenix. The golfing was cold but, at least, we were golfing while our neighbours were shovelling. We hope to get another jump start on the golf season by driving down to Virginia in March for a bit more time on the tee box. The kids are also doing great!! Devin graduated from university in Dec. and is well on his way to becoming a CA. He's also been back in the gym at the Burlington B.G.'s seeing which gymnastic moves he can still perform. He truly is a gymnast at heart. Liddy is a wonderful mom. She went back to work PT in Sept and is doing extremely well on no sleep. It was wonderful for us when they decided to buy a house in Burlington in the fall. Liddy is now steps from work and much closer to me. And, I guess, that Lee, my husband, has really retired this time, or he just doesn't have time to work anymore. Along with all the things we do together, he's had a few music projects on the go with his friends - some children's CDs. The first one was released just before Xmas and they were quick to get started on a second one. Also, the band he's in, The RetroRockits, will be playing at Boston Manor in Burlington on Mar6th around 2:00 p.m. at the annual fundraiser, Rock and Blues Jam, along with many more groups. It's always a good time. For those of you who know my sisters, Mary and Aida, they are also doing well. Aida is loving her life out in Regina with husband, Paul, and her 3 sons. Mary is still living in Waterloo and keeping very busy with family and work. Her daughter got married in Oct and is now living in Sarnia. I don't get to see either of them very often but we manage to stay in touch just the same. I've reconnected with a few girlfriends and it's been great fun! Hope everyone else is happy and healthy. Aug28,2010 It's been eons since I've updated...so here goes... The biggest news of the year was in March when my daughter delivered our first grandchild. He's a healthy darling baby boy and will certainly be a going concern. The new family continues to do wonderfully and I love being a grandma. My husband retired for the second time starting in July. We'll see how long this lasts. I suspect that he is only in semi-retirement (until this darn economy settles down). The summer has felt like one long vacation this year. I've spent most of my time up at the cottage. As I look out onto the lake this morning, I know I'm going to have to give all of this up come Sep so that I can get back to all my city activities. Even though I've played more golf this summer than ever before, my game is not getting any better :( The game sucks me in with a few good shots (or holes) and I think to myself "I can play this game!"...self-delusion my friends....maybe my bowling will improve this year :) My favourite trip of the year was our ski trip to Mount Tremblant. We went while the Olympics were going on. It was wonderful to ski all day and then come in to warm up and watch what was going on. Call me Pollyanna but I loved the "I Believe" theme. I got a bit lazy this year. I didn't write much on my blog but I hope to resurface once my love affair with the Canadian nor...Expand for more
th subsides. Hope everyone is doing well. Be safe, Be healthy and Be Happy! Dec7,2009 Life is great! The best news this year has been that my daughter and her husband are expecting their first child in March. I'm going to be a grandma. I couldn't be more excited. Retirement too is getting better and better for me. I've finally taken time for myself and discovered my love of writing. I've even started a blog exploring my esoteric side. Wishing all my old friends, health & happiness in the new year... Mar13,2009 Here it is a year later...We've downsized and I'm finally feeling like the new place is home. Although I must confess that from time to time I almost drive to the old house out of habit. I'm still rediscovering myself - now that I'm not working. I really like this not working life but I've had some problem deciding what I want to do with myself. For the most part, I just get swept away with daily living and things that come up. My main activities are bowling (yes - that's ten pin and I happen to love it no matter what anyone thinks), bridge (something I learned this year), reading (everything and anything depending on my mood), and the gym & yoga. Lee hurt his knee before Xmas so we didn't get out skiing this winter but we did get to Costa Rica for a bit. In the summer, bowling is replaced with golfing and the gym is replaced with kayaking & swimming. Intellectually and emotionally I still feel I need something more. Recently, I've started writing again. Something I tend to do when I feel like I need to rediscover myself. I'm not very disciplined about it yet so I don't know whether I'll keep it up. The starting phase is particularly difficult for me. My book is called "Over the Hill Orphans". For those of you who have lost your parents, feel free to send me your stories at laima dot stem at gmail dot com. I love to reflect on life and life's lessons - I actually think that this is the passion of my life - sharing what I've gotten out of average life occurences. Eventually, I'll post some pics here too. Hope everyone who reads this is doing well...Laima Mar19,2008 Moving day is almost upon us. We are downsizing to a townhouse..ouch..where am I going to put all my stuff?? This is going to be the next stage of our lives during retirement. We've decided to basically stay in the same area (Mississauga) since we weren't ready to make a bigger change than just the same of house. It is amazing how much junk you accumulate over the years. I am learning to throw things out but I've discovered that it is emotionally draining for me (don't laugh - it's hard to break a habit built up over a lifetime). At the same time, life is very exciting right now. I see the similarities between this period in my life and when I was leaving high school - just filled with possibilities. Since we've retired, we've invested a bundle in new sports equipment...new skiis & snowshoes (they've been great)!...new bowling ball (taking some getting used to)...new golf clubs (won't get to use them till May)...new kayaks (can't wait for the summer)...hope my ability improves now that I have all this "great" equipment. This was a nice diversion but I've got to get back to throwing out and packing. Hope everyone is happy and healthy...Laima ****************************************** Life Here's a quick note which I will expand on over time. I'm married with 2 grown-up children, ages 26 & 24. My daughter got married this summer and my son is going to Brock U. I retired about 4 years ago and my husband retired in October 07. I don't know if this will last but work was always overly consuming and I wanted to try a different lifestyle. I've enjoyed raising a family and building a business but want to have more control over my time now. I haven't traveled the world much but have seen most of Canada and the US from the back of a Honda Goldwing - best way to tour if you ask me. It's fun finding out what everyone has been doing. I think back and realize just how naivee I was. I suppose after another 30 years, I'll be saying something along these lines again.
